A scientific conference on Consciousness research - lay review

The term consciousness as used in Vedanta has a first person

referential frame which is best appreciated by learning from a teacher.

However, those of you who are interested in knowing what is going on

in the scientific world, I thought, might be interested in a

conference that was held recently.

I wrote brief notes on a review of this conference. Since I have

worked as a researcher in biochemistry, I have a penchant to know what

happens in the scientific community. I remember listening to a talk

given by Francis Crick several years ago on Consciousness. He wanted

to use a limited model to understand it. He felt visual consciousness

would work well. I remember my advisor telling me "this subject is a

pure waste of time that only a nobel laureate could be funded to do".

When I read the talks at this conference, I feel much interesting work

has been done. I find the implications of the findings more

challenging to grapple with. For instance, is there a soul? A

scientist speculates that based on the current work, Consciousness is

just an ability to integrate information and he could not see why if

you could generate an identical computational ability in a machine, it

would not be conscious. Or rather its consciousness wouldn't be

necessarily different from what we might term animal consciousness.

I will post the file in this forum, if there is interest. However,

anyone can read the original papers at:

The publication I am referring to is the work of Dr Bill Faw.
