Guest guest
Thank you Professor-ji for another wonderful installment! i eagerly look forward to these gems from the 'Sri-Mukha' of Kanchi Periyavaal. i specially liked these last line in your post " That was the day when Sadashiva became an honest-to-goodness non- reacting, non-acting, non-responding inert-like entity, Sadashiva Brahman! " Non-reacting Non-acting Non- responding Hard to do , is not it in the real world and more so in the cyber world ? You mentioned about "TITIKSHA'in another post in this series .... This is a sanskrit word that is hard to rranslate in the English language . Does'Titiksha' Mean Forbearance ? Does'Titiksha' mean Tolerance ? Does 'Titiksha' mean Non-reaction ? Does 'Titiksha; mean Non-ACTION? The Sadhaka/sadhika who has 'Titiksha' knows how to control the mind ( this is where your latest post on shama and dama is very helpful) - Such a knower of 'Titiksha' is not flattered when someone showers praises on him/her or hurls abuses at him/her ! Again, a knower of 'Titiksha' can hanle both 'pain and pleasure' with sama-bhava . (equanimity of mind). Here i recall my experiences at the Ramanashram which i visited few years ago. In the Ashram, every morning for Breakfast they serve 'four iddlis ' and 'milakai podi' ( chilli chutney powder) along with coffee ! Now , my brother who accompanied us likes his 'iddlis' with 'chinna' vengayam' Sambhar ( small onion ) and Coconut chutney ! So, he preferred to eat his breakfast in a hotel outside of the ashram ! i used to jokingly ask my brother ' Anna, how can YOU ever live in an Ashram if you cannot even control the tongue'? and believe me , of all the sense organs, the 'tongue' is the hardest to control! and interestingly enough, our respected member Mahadevadvaita drew our attention to a very important verse in the Srimad Bhagavat Gita chapter 17 , verse 15 and asks whether there is any yagya for speech control? (post 28316) What a timely reminder ! thank you Mahadevadvaita-ji! NOT AT ALL RAJASIC QUESTION - the intentions are definitely 'sattwic' - smile !! Chapter 17. The Divisions of Faith TEXT 15 anudvega-karam vakyam satyam priya-hitam ca yat svadhyayabhyasanam caiva van-mayam tapa ucyate Simple Translation Austerity of speech consists in speaking truthfully and beneficially and in avoiding speech that offends. One should also recite the Vedas regularly. This is the reason why i find KANCHI PERIYAVAAL'S discourse so fascinating and so beneficial - 'karnamritam' ( nectar to the ears)! Periyavval is also quoting from the scriptures like the ( vedas and upanishads ) and is always speaking from a patform of 'Truth' ( NOT TRUTH IN THE SENSE OF NOT TELLING A LIE - THAT IS THE NARROW DEFINITION - TRUTH HERE MEANS ALSO 'A SELF-REALIZED' SAINT) and pleasing because he is always preaching 'Dharma' ! that is another meaning of 'Titiksha' - you still practice 'Dharma ' while being tolerant, patient and have 'purity' of mind!! Here , i would like to recall another verse from Srimad Bhagvat Gita The Yoga of the Supreme Person TEXT 5 nirmana-moha jita-sanga-dosa adhyatma-nitya vinivrtta-kamah dvandvair vimuktah sukha-duhkha-samjnair gacchanty amudhah padam avyayam tat SIMPLE TRANSLATION One who is free from illusion, false prestige, and false association, who understands the eternal, who is done with material lust and is freed from the duality of happiness and distress, and who knows how to surrender unto the Supreme Person, attains to that eternal kingdom. EXACTLY -give up pride ; then false pride ! then surrender ! Key word is 'surrender' - that is the hardest thing to do ! Atma-nivedanam and atma -samarpanam ! once , you have surrendered to the Higher power , all other things become easy including speech control ! That is why , Lord Hanuman is always doing Ajapa-japa! even while yawning , Hanuman- ji says " RAMA-RAMA'- He does not want to forget Rama's name even for one second ! in closing, satyaM brUyAt.h priyaM brUyAt.h na brUyAt.h satyamapriyaM | priyaM cha nAnR^itaM brUyAt.h eshha dharmaH sanAtanaH || One should speak the truth, and say nice things. One should not say things that are true if they are not nice. And nor should one say nice things if they are not true : This is the ancient practice. Satyam Shivam Sundaram !
