The meaning that is true to the word (name) is not dubious whether the word be a Vedic word or a laukika word." Words not only have meanings ; They have 'connotation ' too ! Take the word 'Maya' for instance ! Maya means many things ! Maya - means to 'measure' Maya - means 'magic' Maya - means ' money' ( Sikhs use this word while describing the desire for riches or money) Maya - means' illusion' But, whenever anyone utters the word 'Maya' the immediate meaning that comes to mind is 'illusion' only because of its connotation ! So Chitta ! It is not so cut and dry - it is true Words have meanings but the same word can mean different things in different contexts! , In any case, do we want to get caught in the web of words ( shabda- jaalam) or in the web of arguments and counter arguments ( vada and vivada leading to vithanda vada ? ) Adi Shankara Bhagavadapada describes this web of 'words' beautifully in Viveka Chudamani shabda-jaalaM mah'aaraNyaM chitta-bhramaNa-kaaraNam ataH prayatnaaj j¤aatavyaM tattva-j¤ais tattvam aatmanaH .. 60 In a labyrinth of words ( shabda jaalam) the mind is lost like a man in a thick forest, therefore with great efforts must be learned the truth about oneself from him who knows the truth. Furthermore aj¤aana-sarpa-dashhTasya brahma-j¤aan'aushhadhaM vinaa kimu vedaish cha shaastraish cha kimu mantraiH kim aushhadhaiH .. Of what use are the Vedas to him who has been bitten by the snake of ignorance? (Of what use are) scriptures, incantations, or any medicine except the medicine of supreme knowledge? and this one, i love the most ! avij¤aate pare tattve shaastraa dhiitis tu nishhphalaa vij¤aate'pi pare tattve shaastraa dhiitis tu nishhphalaa .. When the supreme reality is not understood, the study of the scriptures is useless, and study of the scriptures is useless when the supreme reality has been understood. AND FINALLY, May I SHARE THIS VERSE WITH YOU? "He who Doubts from what he sees Will ne'er Believe, do what you Please. He who replies to words of Doubt Doth put the Light of Knowledge out. A Riddle, or the Cricket's Cry, Is to Doubt a fit Reply." - W.Blake (107-8, 95-6, 103-4, Auguries of Innocence) Chitta - my 'son' (sun - Suraj) , smile!
