Sri Subramaniyam writes :

(For a Jnananishtha, Bhagavadbhakti and Gurubhakti are not

different. Many are the instances in the life of our Acharya, Sri

ShankaraBhagavatpada, that demonstrate that the ideal Jnani is truly

devoid of even the slightest ego and humility is deep rooted in him.)

ADI shankaracharya in his famous Guruvashtakam states :

úaãañgádivedo mukhe ùástraivdyá

kavitvádi gradyam supadyam karoti

manaùcenna lagnam gurorañghripadme

tataç kim tataç kim tataç kim tataç kim (3)

The Vedas with their six auxiliaries and knowledge of sciences may be

on the one's lips; one may have the gift of poesy; and may compose

good prose and poetry; but if one's mind be not attached to the lotus

feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence?

and in verse 37 of Vivka chudamai it is said :

shaantaa mahaanto nivasanti santo

vasantaval lokahitaM charantaH

tiirNaaH svayaM bhiima-bhavaarNavaM janaan

ahetun'aanyaan api taarayantaH .. 37

"The great and peaceful ones live regenerating the world like the

coming of spring, and after having themselves crossed the ocean of

embodied existence, help those who try to do the same thing, without

personal motives.

Sri Subramaniyam-ji writes :

(To be free of egoism is the greatest challenge. Sri Ramakrishna has

said: 'God might grant even Mukti but would not so easily grant

Bhakti.' True Bhakti is marked by the highest order of egolessness.)

'Anugraham' or Guru's compassion is very essential in any spiritual

path.

It is through Guru we get the kataksha of god/ess and it is through

god/ess we get the guru itself. Please note the mutual dependance.

one of the names of Sri lalita in Sri Lalita Sahasaranama is 'sri

Gurumurtihi' ( one who has the form of Guru)

another name is Sri Dakshinamurthi swarupinaye namaha ! ( one who has

the form of Lord Dakshinamurthy)

Kanchi Mahaperiyavaal said

the Three deities Kamakshi, Meenakshi , Visalakshi bestow their grace

on the devotee by touch, by look and by thought" - yes, sparsha

diksha, nayana diksha and vichara diksha! The great Bhaskaraya of Sri

vidya tradition initiated his disciples by mere 'glance- nayana

diksha! Swami vivekananda was initiated by Sri Ramakrishna by

mere 'touch'

Totakacharya, one of the disciples , composed Totakastakam and

dedicated it to his Guru ADI SHANKARA

Oh, Thou, the knower of the entire ocean of milk of scriptures, He

Who teaches the truths found in the great treasure chest of the

Upanishads ! I meditate on Thy faultless feet. Be Thou my refuge, Oh,

Master Sankara.

Vande Guru Paramparam!
