Namaste to all Friends:

There is a wonderful work of Sri Vidyaranya titled: Jivanmukti-viveka. The

revered author has quoted from the Laghu Yoga Vaasishtha profusely in this work.

The book is published by The Adyar Library and Research Centre. While the first

half of the book contains the entire text of the work in Sanskrit, the latter

half is a beautiful translation in English by Pandit S. Subrahmanya Sastri and

Sri T.R. Srinivasa Ayyangar. The work has these five chapters:

1. Authority bearing testimony to Jivanmukti or Liberation in Life -

Pramaana-prakaranam

2. On the obliteration of Latent Impressions - Vaasana-kshaya-prakaranam

3. On the Dissolution of the Mind - Manonaasha-prakaranam

4. The Purpose of the Attainment of Jivanmukti -

Svarupa-siddhi-prayojana-prakaranam

5. Renunciation of the Knower - Vidvat-sannyaasa-prakaranam

The work is an excellent practical guide to all sadhakas for the problem of

dur-vasanas is common to all mankind. Here are just two slokas from the

Yogavasishtha from the second chapter shown above:

'O best of the intellectuals! the obliteration of latent impressions, Gnosis

and the dissolution of the mind, if attempted simultaneously for a sufficient

length of time, bestow the desired fruit.' L.Yo.Va. 28.116

'Even if these be attempted one by one, for a long time, they are not

attended with success, as is the case with incantations, uttered one by one,

which have to be invariably pronounced together.' 117

The utility of the work is enhanced by the Author providing explanatory

comments for each of the verses that is quoted. Apart from the Yoga vasishtha,

there are a number of quotations from various other scriptures including the

Bhagavadgita.

With warm regards to one and all

subbu
