It cracked open and out of it sprang the 7 ft. tall figure of Shiva with a trident who told him that he must commence 20 years of tapas......) Wow! Michael-ji! What a coincidence that you should take the name of Lord Shiva right before 'Shiva-ratri' , an auspicious festival observed by hindus all over the world . Myth or reality, our beloved shiva has a unique way of manifesting at the right time - no wonder , he is called 'swayumbhu' ?( the self-existent ONE)! i do not know if you believe this , Michael-ji, but it is said if you take the name of lord Shiva with fervor and devotion during Shivaratri , you will go to the abode of Siva ( sivaloka) ! Michael-ji, please allow me to share this favorite verse of mine from Adi Shankaracharya's Shiva Manasa puja .... Aatmaa tvam girijaa matih sahacharaah praanaah shariiram griham Poojaa te vishhayopabhogarachanaa nidraa samaadhisthitih . Sajnchaarah padayoh pradakshinavidhih stotraani sarvaa giro Yadyatkarma karomi tattadakhilam shambho tavaaraadhanam.h .. 4 You are my self; Paarvatii is my reason. My five praanaas are your attendants, my body is your house, and all the pleasures of my senses are objects to use for your worship. My sleep is your state of samaadhii. Wherever I walk I am walking around you, everything I say is in praise of you, everything I do is in devotion to you, o benevolent lord! to read and hear the entire stotra , pl go to http://www.astrojyoti.com/shivamansa%20pooja.htm i wish all members here a very Auspicious Shiva-ratri ! Aum Namaha Shivaya!
