Pranams to all.

This has reference to the letter of Sri Ram Chandran and other lotters prior

to this letter on the same subject.

Even though the words used by Upanaishadic Sages are mind born, the

vastu at which the words are pointing out is not mind born. In fact the

Upanishadic Sages in an ingenious way point out at the vastu, which is none

other than our true svarupa and which exists prior to the functioning of

aMthahkaraNa. The following Mantras show how this has been done:

a) na manO vijij~JAsIta mantAram vidyAt ||

One should not enquie into the mind. One should enquire

into

the Knower of the mind.

- - Kaushitaki upaniShat : ch.5 Mantra 8

b) yanmanasA na manutE yEnAhurmanO matam|

tadEva brahma tvaM viddhi nEdaM yadidamupAsatE ||

- - Kena Upanishad; Ch. 1 Mantra 6.

c) Mantra 11, Brahmana 8, Chapter 3 of BrihadAranyaKa

Upanishad.

d) There is an ancient verse in Sanskrit quoted by Sri

Ramana

Maharshi in The supplement to Forty Verses on Reality:

" Who is God?" " The Witness of the mind."

" My mind is witnessed by myself".

" So you are God." The Scriptures also state

There is but one God, Witness of the All.

Such Mantras are available in plenty in all the Upanishads.

The message given out by the above Mantras IS: Your goal of enquiry is to

know the true nature of the enquirer, not an enquiry into the vAchyartha of the

words of scriptures or the various teachers belonging to different traditions or

no tradition at all. The first one makes one Atmavit, the second one makes one

a Mantravit. We should become Atmavit and not a Mantravit.

With warm and respectful regards,

Sreenivasa Murthy
