Guest guest
Hari Om ~~~~~~~ Hello and Namaste Frederico, lets see if I can answer some of your questions. also , pardon my typing. I see lots of errors and am not sure how to do spell check within this posting application , so I will be careful. 1. The mind, manas, is influenced by the Moon, called soma, or chandra. ( Fyi In the gita, Krsna says he is the Moon; He also says he enters each planet or graha). So, in Jyptish there are three legs, the mind (manas) , the atman ( indicated by sun, Surya)and the body or the physical structure, this is owned by the lagna or ascendant rasi called ones rising sign sometimes. Each graha influences ones presence on this earth, so say the rishi's , Parashara, Jaimini, etc. The 27 nakshatra's (or lunar constellations) each of 13degrees 20 min are the various locations the moon passes in the month. Each Nakshatra has a specific quality to it, just as a sign ( like Gemini) has a quality to it. The moon in Jyotish is as important as the sun. As each sign is ruled by a graha, so is each Nakshatra. Not only does each sign and Nakshatra have a ruler, it also has a sound/vibration that goes with it. SO, a Good jyotisha knows how to name (nama) a new born for maximum benefit in his or her life to bring out the quality of the birth chart that is most auspicious. 2. Muhurta - or timing of events and action. This is why people ask for a pachanga or a calendar that shows the movement of planets. It has the following info: tithi - I will discuss below. nakshatra - we discussed above in the last paragraph. vara- day of the week, each is owned by a graha yoga - the addition of sun+moon longitude makes a specific yoga there are 27 of them karana - is measured as 1/2 a tithi Muhurta - or 48 minutes of a day. 30 Muhurta in one 24 hour period i.e. 48 min X 30 muhurta = 24 hours. I will just talk about Tithi as this science is really in-depth: the tithi, or the longititude of the moon from the sun - each 12 degrees is one tithi. One tithi per day , waxing and wanning ( full moon to new moon) or 15 tithi's to wax, and 15 tithi's to wane. Each tithi is owned by Agni or Brahma, Gauri, Ganesha, Sarpa, etc etc and each has a cetain quality. There are 15 owners for the bright half of the month , Shukla Paksha, and dark half, Krisha Paksha. So, from Pournima ( Full moon) to Amavasya or new moon. Each tithi is names, Pratipada, Dwitiya.... to Pournima. Vishu's most favorite tithi as you know is the 11th tithi, called ekadasi ( eka 1, + Dasa 10 = 11th tithi); Shiva's is Chaturdasi, the 14th. NOW, there is a special 16th tithi that is between the last tithi and the 1st tithi that is a gap. this is auspicious for meditition and spiritual pursuits. These gaps are the 'in between times' found in astrology, and even called out in the Upanishads. IF there is interest I will post some info on the GAPS for you to consider. What is of great interest is how the rishi/Jyotisha divided up time and was able to discern favorable and unfavorable times ( Muhurta) for events e.g. Sarvarth Siddha Yoga and the best times on Sunday, Monday, etc. Ravi yoga that is the destroyer of all unfavorable or inasupicious yoga's, etc. If this interests yo pls conasider reading Muhurta Chintamani, not casual reading. 3. Timing measures go from 1 truti , the smallest time period. 3,000 of these truti's = 1 wink of an eye. Then we go incremenatally up to a muhurta ( 48 minutes), 1 hora or 1 hour, then weeks , months, ( 1 ritu = 2 months) years. At years we have (1) samvatara or 60 year cycle , made up of (3) 20 ) year cycles of Brahma, Vishnu, Siva. Then on to Yuga's. Please read more in this http://www.indiangyan.com/books/therapybooks/astrology_simplified/s.s html - you may find it interestng. One Day of Brahma Brahma lives for 100 years. One day of Brahma is of duration equivalent to 1000 mahayugas. His night is equally long. At the beginning of every day, creation starts. At the end of the day all that was created merge in the Absolute and Brahma `sleeps' as it were. 360 such days and nights make one year of Brahma. According to the Puranas, He has spent 50 years like this and this day is the first day in his fifty-first year. One day of Brahma = 4.32 billon years. His life span = 311,040,000,000,000 human years and the material universe goes away so they say] The present 'guess' is the universe is 15 billion years old ( new?) or the universe is 0.0005% of the total time so far. FYI one second = 100,000 human years. I think the 15 billon may be a little low? " ...all this is pure consciousness" - Brahamarishi Vasistha talking to Sri Ram in the Yoga Vasistha. Guest guest
Hari Om, Namaste Yajvan, Thank you very much for explaining the Jyotish science (or a fragment of it) to me. In the west, as you know, there is also Jyotish science (astrology) but it is not as detailed and as rich as the Hindu Jyotish. You clarified a lot to me. For example: > The 27 nakshatra's (or lunar constellations) each of 13degrees 20 > min are the various locations the moon passes in the month. Each > Nakshatra has a specific quality to it, just as a sign ( like > Gemini) has a quality to it. The moon in Jyotish is as important as > the sun. As each sign is ruled by a graha, so is each Nakshatra. > Not only does each sign and Nakshatra have a ruler, it also has a > sound/vibration that goes with it. SO, a Good jyotisha knows how to > name (nama) a new born for maximum benefit in his or her life to > bring out the quality of the birth chart that is most auspicious. It is interesting that my current name (Frederico) was suggested by an astrologer who is friend of my mother; it was the same astrologer who introduced me to my Guru, as she was his disciple and talked about him to my mother, who then after 4 years of trouble with me finally introduced me to my Guru. :-) I really am indebted karmically to this person, this friend and astrologer who not only gave me my name Frederico but also put me in contact with a living self-realized being. > Muhurta - or 48 minutes of a day. 30 Muhurta in one 24 hour period > i.e. 48 min X 30 muhurta = 24 hours. Thanks for the clarification on Muhurta. > I will just talk about Tithi as this science is really in-depth: > the tithi, or the longititude of the moon from the sun - each 12 > degrees is one tithi. Very interesting indeed. The more amazing thing is that some words in Sanskrit are really similar to Portuguese... especially the numbers , such as in Asht, Sayat, Dasa... these are almost the same as Portuguese words for these numbers (Oito, Sete, Dez). It is interesting how many languages developed from this bright and sacred language called Sanskrit. > NOW, there is a special 16th tithi that is between the last tithi > and the 1st tithi that is a gap. this is auspicious for meditition > and spiritual pursuits. If it does not take much of your time, I think not only myself but also other interested members of the forum would benefit from your posting more about the 16th tithi, the gap. > What is of great interest is how the rishi/Jyotisha divided up time > and was able to discern favorable and unfavorable times ( Muhurta) > for events e.g. Sarvarth Siddha Yoga and the best times on Sunday, > Monday, etc. Ravi yoga that is the destroyer of all unfavorable or > inasupicious yoga's, etc. If this interests yo pls conasider > reading Muhurta Chintamani, not casual reading. I will do so, and post something about my impressions about it here. If I can find an English or at least French rendering for this text. that is. Thanks a lot, one doubt remained though: which is the deity which rules our present 20-year-cycle started in 1999? Is it Brahma?
