Guest guest
Jai Gurudev, dear anu, > > also since you are computer guy, help me with aproblem. a few days > ago, i got a mail with a virus. the net result is that i am unable to > download any files from the net or view attachments. wwghat can i do > to mend that?? > I chatted with my network admin he tells that if i can give hime the file name he told that he would be letting me know what the fix is. basically the fix depends on type of virus which has a charectrestic file name, 2) he told a general rule that when you are opening an attatchment sent as email ,instead of opening it right away by double clicking he told that you should down load the file save it and then try to open it from the required program, and if the downlaoded file happens to be a exe told one should not take the risk of opening it. say u get a file called foo.xls as an attatchment and it could basically be a foo.xls.vba where vba part is made not visible, so you think it is an excel(.xls) file and open it by double clicking bascially you are opening a vba program becos windows links the files to the programs that run it when you double click. SO DOUBLE CLICKING is dangerous so continuing again... i have downlaoded the foo.xls file ,i dont double click but i go to the EXCEL PROGRAM (which opens .xls files) and try to open the file from the program ,it would not open because its a foo.xls.vba file , then it would right away inidicate that some thing is fishy , and then you take the file name and go to the NORTON /symantec website and post the full file name over there and search for the fix they would let u know what the virus and its fix and all that process.... 3)or you can go to norton website www.norton.com you have a feature called internet security check which tries to check your computer thru u internet connection and report a solution after it has scanned, i dont know much info abt this, but this is another option, but for that you should have IE 4.01 and active X enabled... if u can send the file name to me its ok ,as my admin offered me that he would help me(instead of i asking him... ) with this when i told ur problem, the fix would clean the virus and reboot the system for you that is what he told so kind of cool... hope this solves ur problem and other members also get the idea of how to open attatchment and avoid attacks, i never bothered to know all this stuff but i know now affectionately Jai Gurudev
