Guest guest
The Bhagavata Purana is famous for the rasa leela of Krishan with the Gopis. For a long time I wondered, how someone with 16,008 wives could talk of celibacy(as in the Gita), since then however my overtly rational mind has come in contact with several profoundly wonderful people who have in effect told that me that what one sees is not what is intended to be conveyed; there are three stages in scriptural study- smarana- to remember and study them mannana- to think about them nidhidhyasana- deep contempation when the answer is revealed to you. The rasa leela has often been portrayed by ignorant people as the gambit of a lustful and notorious teenager(Krishna). Following is the esoteric meaning of rasa leela based on a lecture by Smt. Prema Pandurang- The Gopis are like us, human beings concerned with materialistic living and coveting and gathering material riches. At some point when the Lord sees that we are getting too greedy and are loosing track of our real purpose, he comes and gives us a blow to make us turn inward. And suddenly when we turn inward, we realise what folly! how could I indulge in my previous pursuits when I had the greatest treasure right within myself. So as the gopis were concerned only with making curd(materialistic desires), the Lord comes and steals them or break the curd pots. And now the Gopis run after Krishna. And Krishna then mesmerizes them with his tantalizing leelas. And then Gopis do not want anything else for they have priceless treasure of the Divine Lover Himself.
