If I can comment from my own experience:

1-I've used some acrylic thread or cotton thread, doubled for

strenght, but the nylon string someone else mentioned sounds good,

because I don't think it'd absorb as much oil as the others, when

oiling your beads.

2-I bought a variety pack of needles and used one. I did have to

make the hole a little more open/smoother for it to pass, but even

then it was hard. I've read for rosary makers, that you can dip

the end of the thread in nail-polish laquer or rub some beewax on it

to make the end stiff to use without a needle.

3-I've also read that you can by a "bead-reamer" for making holes

larger or smoother, at bead shops.

4-Search online for rosary-making techniques and such for tips.

I'm kinda getting into it as a hobby. The local mall has a bead

shop that's having a one-day class on rosary making for $35 plus

supplies which I'll probably take. I'm more interested in the

technique for stringing them with wire. There's also a special knot

that's made for rosary making that I'm going to try to adapt to use

as a knot between larger rudrakshas.
