I did have to make the hole a little more open/smoother for it to pass, but even then it was hard. I've read for rosary makers, that you can dip the end of the thread in nail-polish laquer or rub some beewax on it to make the end stiff to use without a needle. 3-I've also read that you can by a "bead-reamer" for making holes larger or smoother, at bead shops. 4-Search online for rosary-making techniques and such for tips. I'm kinda getting into it as a hobby. The local mall has a bead shop that's having a one-day class on rosary making for $35 plus supplies which I'll probably take. I'm more interested in the technique for stringing them with wire.
