Guest guest Posted December 13, 2002 Report Share Posted December 13, 2002 Aghora is a very unconventional path followed by very few, that involves several things usually considered "gory". And that's exactly what "Aghori" actually means.....someone for whom nothing is "gory" or "unacceptable". Many Aghoris live in cremation grounds for some time, and perform Shava Sadhanas and such, among other things. Their main objective is to embrace everything including the most unpleasant and unacceptable, so that eventually nothing is unacceptable for them. That way, they learn to fully embrace ALL reality and transcend the dualities of "good and evil" or "pleasant and unpleasant" and it's certainly a very powerful way of transcending Maya. Tailanga Swami of Benaras was a very powerful Aghori, and perhaps the only one who performed worship of Shiva at the Kashi Vishwanath temple using his own filth. And Tailanga Swami could do so because he had full realization that filth is as much a part of the Universal Soul as roses, holy water etc. The priest who saw Tailanga Swami doing such "dirty things" slapped him and ordered him out. But at the same night, Shiva appeared in a dream to the king of Benaras and told the king about his anger since someone insulted Tailanga Swami, who's Shiva's very essence. The King then set out to find the priest and punish him, but the priest was mysteriously found dead. There are many other Aghoris too.... Gorakhnath, Matsyendranath, Dattatreya.....they're all Aghoris. For more information on Aghora, you find like to check out the following books: Aghora: At the Left Hand of God Aghora II: Kundalini Aghora III: The Law of Karma all by Robert E Svoboda, who studied for a very long time under a great Aghori adept in Bombay. These three are some of my all-time favorites, and you might also enjoy reading them. If you're in India, you can get each book for Rs.200. Or you can order them from amazon.com.
