Hence it is no surprise he has said thus. In the shastras, many types of "snan" (bathing) are mentioned/explained: divya snaan, vaaruNa snaan, aagnEya snaan, vaayavya snaan, mantra snaan, maanasa snaan, bhauma snaan, gaurava snaan etc. The kind of snaan that Shree swamiji has mentioned is called divya snaan. Divya snaan: drenching one's body in the rain that showers when there is bright sunlight. It is also called as "Mahendra snaan", "aindra snaan", or "nabha snaan". It is prescribed that the bather should face east, lift up his both arms and reciting the "eeshaana mantra", walk 7 steps. aathapE vrShti sanyukthe praangmukhOh - oordhva baahukah | eeshaanam japEnmanthram gatchEth pada sapthakam || [ajithaagama] The "eeshaana manthra" is thus: eeshaanah sarva vidhyaanaam | eeshwarah sarva bhoothaanaam | brahmaadhipathir brahmaNODhi pathir brahmaa ShivO mE asthu sadhaa shivOm || I am not able to find the explanation for its significance. But we can figure out the same with the help of other mantras and rituals. For example, while bathing in a river or while doing "sanDhyaavandan" or poojaa of any deity, we invoke the "theertha devatas" (water gods) by contemplating upon the Sun [aadithya mandalam]: "brahmaandodhara theerThaani karaih sprShtaani thE ravEh | thEna sathyEna mE dEva theerTham dhEhi divaakara ||" Normally when it rains, the sky will be full of clouds and one can hardly see the Sun. Such rains are obviously due to clouds. When there are really no enough clouds and the Sun is shining bright and it rains, we can imagine that it is a divine rain, the rain originating from the Sun. Hence such a snaan is considered equivalent to taking a dip in the Gangaa. I shall be greatfull if any of the enlightened members provide a better explanation. A million salutations to u all. , "Prasad Balasubramanian" <besprasad@l...> wrote: > namasthe, > > Shri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Swamigal of Sringeri (the previous MaTAdhipathi/pontiff) has told that when it rains when sun is visible, getting ourselves wet is equivalent to bathing in Holy Ganga River. > > I just thought of sharing this with all.
