The "long" form of the Gayathri you have referred to is actually the original Gayathri mantra. But here, the mantra is incomplete in that the last leg of the mantra called the "shiro mantra" (head mantra) is left out. This Gayathri was revealed by the Parabrahman (supreme being) at the time of creation and practiced till the "thrEthaayuga", when sage Vishwamitra percieved the "shorter form" of the Gayathri with only 3 vyAhrthis. This is the Gayathri prescribed and practiced by all now. The "long form" which you have quoted is used only in the "Upanayanam" - the sacred thread ceremony, in which an 8 year old Brahmin boy is initiated into the Gaayathri. It should not be used for japa. [pancha sheershOpanayanE viniyOgah] The "long form" Gayathri is called as "saptha vyahrthi Gayathri" [the Gaayathri with 7 vyaahrthis], Brahma Gaayathri or Vasishta Gaayathri to differentiate it from the present Gaayathri with 3 vyahrthis - widely known as the "Vishwamithra Gaayathri" - the one that should be used for japa. mantra_tantra, "jlondon5560" <streamrdr@c...> wrote: > I was reading a posting earlier today where someone asked if there > were different versions of the Gayatri mantra.
