We know that Tuesdays and Saturdays are held sacred and auspicious to

worship Lord AnjanEya. One might suspect that they are his birthdays

(janma vAra). But accounts vary with regard to the precise moment

when HanumAnji appeared on earth. Whatever the differences be, it is

an undisputed point that anjanA dEvi gave birth to HanumAn on the

southern side of the SumEru mountain (within the present-day

Karnataka). Given below are some of the better-known dates:

 

1. agasthya sanhita

 

oorjE kRshNa chaturdaShyAm BhoumE swAtyAm kapivarah |

mEShalagrE anjanA garBhAt prAdurBhootah swayam shivah ||

 

(Shiva made his appearance as HanumAn, coming out of the womb of

anjanA

on the 14th day of the dark half of the month of kArthIk when the

constellation swAti was prevalent; the lagna (ascendant) was mEsha;

and it was Tuesday)

 

 

2. vAyu purANa

 

aShwinsyA site pakshE swAthyAm BhoumE chaturdaShI |

mEShalagrE anjanI garBhat swayam jAtO harah Shivah ||

 

(same details as above, except that the month is aShwin)

 

 

3. Ananda rAmAyaNa

 

chaitrE mAsi site pakShE hari dinyAm maGhABhiDhE |

nakaShatrE sa samutpannO hanumAn ripusoodanah ||

 

(eleventh day of the dark half of the Chaitra month; maGhA nakShatra)

 

 

 

4. Skanda purANa

 

mESha sankramaNjm BhAnau sanprApthE munisattamah |

poorNimAKhyE tiThau puNyE chittA nakShatra sanyutE ||

 

(same details as above, but chittA nakshatra)

 

 

 

5. MangaLAShtaka

 

vaiShAKha mAsa kRShNAyAm daShamI mandavAsarE |

poorvABhAdrA sujAthAya mangalam ShrI hanumathE ||

 

( Saturday, the 10th lunar day of the dark half of the month of

vaiShAKha, when the poorvABhAdrA was prevailing)

 

 

6. Tantra – sAra

 

chaitrE mAsI sitE pakShE pourNamAsyAm kujEhani |

mounjI mEKhalAyA yukthah kaupIna DhArakah ||

karNayOh kundalE prAptastaThA yagnOpavItakah |

pravAla varNO muKhE puChchE cha skakah |

Evam vAnara roopENa prakatO BhootkShuDhAturah ||
