Vibhuthi, Sindoor , Shree Churnam , Gopi Chandanam , the Sandal paste etc which one wears not only Constitute an important symbol of a Sanatana Dharmi but also it has an intrinsic value for the wearer giving him immense spiritual benefits. This mail focuses only on the " Vibhuthi." What our Contemporary Masters have spoken on Vibhuthi : Maha Swamy of Kaanchi.: The holy ash is prepared as per scriptures ( HH Haridas Giri has extensively Lectured on the process as per Devi Bhagawath) from the holy dried Cow Dung . It is burnt in slow fire when it turns black initially represents – Maha Vishnu and on constant burning turns into the Ash color which is the Shivam. So the holy ash is " Shankara Narayanan " representing the unity of both the forms the Parabrahman and is " Sarva Bhushana" which gives immense spiritual benefits to the wearer including the removal of fear of Yama Loka. The root cause of all the ailments is the impurity of the Human Mind which affects the physical body. ( as a result of anger, pride, envy, jealousy, hatred, greed, worry, ambition, fear etc.) Vibhuthi helps in the purification of the mind when used in conjunction with the spiritual practices. The physical cure is incidental and of secondary importance to the far superior subtle benefits he derives being able to control the mind. Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi ; The end product of all materials put in the fire is ash and it does not recognize the material value or nature of the object ( Eg; Sandal wood or a country wood ) So Vibhuthi is symbolic reminder of purity ( Made from Agni which is the purest of the elements ) , it denotes wisdom like the Agni burns A-gyan or ignorance. That wisdom teaches the discrimination, renunciation and detachment. In the Brihad Upanishad the vibhuthi is equated with prosperity and one's spiritual splendour. It contains a divine secret; it also destroys danger and protects the one who wears. It is a silent messenger of detachment and renunciation teaching the most elementary step of one's sadhana. Vibhuthi has got an aspect of "Immortality" when one does the Abhisheka to God with it as it continues to remain unchanged, while flowers and leaves offered to God fade and dry away, fruits decay and water cannot be left standing indefinitely. Vibhuthi is the final result of five elements of creation. It is our desires which have to be reduced to ashes and Vibhuthi is thus symbolic also. ( Baba's most Potent Prasad the Vibhuthi is well known to all His devotees ) Shree Devi Bhagawath : In the fifteenth chapter of the eleventh Skaanda deals elaborately on the " Vibhuthi Mahatmeym " --- This describes how to prepare Vibhuthi, how to wear it, why it should worn and many other important source of information. Devi willing I shall post some aspects of it in my next mail. Sorry State of Affairs : In the Holy Bharath specially in the South, unscrupulous Traders Burn the old News papers and mix it with other ash to sell it as Holy Ash to make a quick buck. If this scrap is offered to GOD, it is but natural that the results from God would be a Scrap. So devotees ensure that the quality of Vibhuthi bought from the shops is good.
