Dear spiritual brothers and sisters,

It is my endeveour to bring

little known aspects of hinduism and especially shivite and shaktha

worship. This posting is about Puruhootika Devi.

In the distant past 'Sati Devi' a

daughter of Daksha and consort of Lord Siva immolated Herself in as

She as also Lord Siva were insulted by Her father. Disgusted by this

calamity Lord Siva carried Her partly burnt body on his shoulders

and danced fiercely. Unable to withstand the rigor of his ferocity

the world trembled. To try to pacify Lord Siva, Lord Vishnu followed

Him and severed the various parts of Sati Devi' s Body with the

divine weapon Sudarsana Chakra and the places at which they fell

became eighteen famous pilgrim centers of worship of the divine

mother. They are called the Asta dasa Sakti Peethas (Asta - Eight,

dasa-Ten, Sakti - the Divine Mother; embodiment of Power, Peetha -

seat of power). One such part fell at this sacred place and hence

this pilgrim center has become famous as Pithapuram. The place of

spiritual power(Pitha - seat, Puram-Town).

Indra the Lord of heaven was the first to worship the Mother here

and hence the diety is called Puruhootika devi (Puruhoota - Indra)

Her incarnation is due to the power of penance of the saint 'Ela'.

Her divine miracles are ever-flowing.

She bestowes spiritual power to the sacred pilgrim center 'Pada

Gaya'. At first Indra the Lord of Heaven, worshipped Her here.

Thereafter Sri Pada Sri Vallabha an incarnation of Lord Datta also

worshipped Her. She is adored by Sri Sachchidananda (Truth -

Knowledge - Bliss).

Yours yogically,

Dattu
