Dear "marshall martian",

 

I was prompted to write after reading your message to Jay. This IS

RamanaMaharshi , isn't it?

 

You are somewhat misinformed in your understanding of the legalities and

effects of drugs. Marijuana actually constricts the mind. Oftentimes, and

consequently, sensory awareness is expanded and heightens pleasurable

feelings (hence it's popularity). While high on pot, thoughts fall in on

themselves or implode.

The most effective tool in eradicating the onslaught of thoughts is

non-resistence (wait and do nothing). Peace is a process that starts from

within. We aren't victims of our thoughts, therefore we certainly needn't

believe them or take them personally (or seriously!).

 

Basically, ANY drug clouds Sattvic (pure) awareness. By one teaching, the

high that you described while on marijuana can be used as a short visit to

feeling enlightened. In THAT school of thought, it doesn't really matter

what drugs one does or what one eats for that matter. Our life is truly the

manifestation of the Self or Atma consciousness and that has already been

accomplished by our actual existence through human phenomenon. Mission

accomplished, we can choose to do all the drugs we want and eat whatever we

want.

 

Since this IS Ramana Maharshi , therefore support regarding HIS

teachings....the ultimate question is, who is it who is smoking pot and

getting high? Who is it who is singing mantras? Who is it who is listening

to holy music? Who needs protection? Whose mind is being "expanded"(or

contracted)? He states "Other than self inquiry, there is no adequate means

for making the mind quiescent."

..

Although Ramana Maharshi is careful not to criticise, he offers guidelines

for the spiritual aspirant by keeping the digestive and other organs free

from irritations.

 

Finally, you have an odd idea as to the nature of Siva and the mind. Ramana

Marharshi might ask ...Why are you concerned as to which direction you face?

Face yourself. And, Who are these 'rightwingers' to whom cause you such

concern? There are no leftwingers or rightwingers. Turn inwards and find it

is all SELF (Atma at play). There is no 'you'. Fear is always of the

"other" and where no other is perceived....then there is nothing to fear.

That's the state of fearlessness (abhaya).

 

Consciousness is eternal and IS Siva (destruction isn't negative, but

essential to creation). The mind is a system of thoughts and a consequence

of the contraction of Tamas (inertia or darkness), the outward activity of

Rajas and the principle of Sattva (existence)...all happening

simutaneously. It moves out, it comes back in. All moving in perfect harmony

and ALL of it is highly impersonal.

Since the Self is the only true/absolute reality, there are no separate

persons...it is all connected.

 

I hope Jay got something out of your letter. Pot smoking isn't wrong, it

just won't get you where you want to go.

That is, if you're serious about the teachings of Ramana Marharshi. If not,

please choose another format to advise.
