Hello Everybody

Again I have something to ask. I hope that it is allright

with owners & moderators & everybody else.

I landed in the middle of Ramana's teachings directly ,

as a plane that crushes and suddenly finds itself

in a foreign place .

I am out of that plane - safely, let's say -

and I look around and I discover myself in the middle

of an unknown place ,a foreign land , a foreign language;

I look around and I do not understand the panels.

Please if somebody could explain the main "panels" !

(such as every word, expression , symbol that one

who knows only English and enters

Ramana Maharshi's official site does not understand).

Thank you ,

Namaste ,

Vicki.

The nice list of key terms used by Sri Ramana and a nice

explanation to them can be found in the book "Be As You Are"

by David Godman. May be some one can point out to an online

version of it ?

With love,

Gomu.

There is a lot to look at on the Official Site:

www.ramana-maharshi.org

Is there perhaps something specific which we could start with?

Hi Miles.

Yes , it is.

Last summer I read the first book - The Teachings of Ramana Maharshi, edited by

Arthur Osborne.

After a couple of months I came back to it and read it again.

After that - "Ramana Maharshi and the Path of Self-knowledge" , Arthur Osborne,

and "A Practical Guide to Know Yourself ", edited by Natarajan

,

the book I used to post from while reading it.

Everytime I met a word I didn't understand I looked for it at the end of the

book.

Anyway , after all this time I still don't know the meaning of the symbol below

..

(from the main page of www.ramana-maharshi.org site).

I copied/pasted it here .

If you could explain - thank you ! ,

Vicki.

I am sorry , Miles.

I didn't succed either sending an attached file ,

and then I discovered it was not permitted.

I'll try to describe - it is everything above Ramana's picture, on the main

page ,

on the right side, starting with

SRI RAMANASRAMAM

..........

..........

Thank you , Vicki.

Dear Vicki,

Is it this you are asking about?

'om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya'

This is THE mantra for Ramana Bhaktas. Here's a brief summary:

The name Ramana was given by Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni to Ramana when he was

a young man and has, of course, become the universally accepted name we use.

Ganapati Muni also confirmed Ramana as both Bhagavan and Maharshi.

srI: is a respectful title.

RamaNa: pleasing, charming, delightful. This undoubtedly signifies the bliss

of the Self. ('ramanAya' is quite simply the dative form.)

namo: bow, obeisance. (comes from namah. We spoke about 'namas' before, as

in namaste. The change in final letters is a result of Sandhi, 'juncture'.

i.e. where two words come together in sanskrit (indeed in any spoken

language) there may be sound change.)

bhagavate: divine, venerable, possessing fortune etc. (dative of 'bhagavat')

"I make obeisance, and honour, in respect of the venerable, divine Ramana

who, absorbed in the Self, is the possessor of all fortune." (very free

translation)

Om: in brief, a Sacred exclamation. However much more could and has been

written about it. We might discuss this again if you wish. It comes up often

in my interest and teaching of Sabdapurvayoga.

Regards

Miles

Yes, Miles, this is it !

How much I longed for an explanation of every word of this!

There is a circle above the mantra ,like a sun, with some

letters inside ,what do they mean ?

Thank you ,

Vicki.

Miles

Thank you, Miles.

As about translation of words that can be found at the end of any book -

I don't really want to know more at the moment

& also I don't have any other particular question to ask right now,

Regards,

Vicki.

Dear Vicky,

Yet another question:

Is thinking a habit or human nature?

Subramanian

A thought brought me to a Teaching that says that

Truth is beyond thought (and I believe in that) -

How do you explain it ?

Vicki.

Hi,

> Is OM the sound of the universe or is the universe the sound of OM?

There is no fantasy and mystery here. The voice apparatus of man has

various parts. Different sounds use different parts. OM uses all the

parts, in sequence. It starts with a "A"( which is the "first" and most

primitive sound), then it goes to a palatal "U" and ends in a labial

"M". It symbolizes all the sound which can be made by man. Thus all

other sounds, words and sentences are considered to be derived from

parts of OM. Just as it is God who has manifested as this universe and

everything in it, it is OM which has manifested as all the sounds,

words and literature made by man. Hence, OM is considered the best

symbol of God. OM basically represents "everything".

With regards,

Gomu.

I guess you should be right that truth is beyond

thought. Our Bhagavan too says(Courtesy Dr.Sarada, in

the latest, The Ramana Way, a magazine from Ramana

Maharshi Centre for learning):

Thinking is not our nature. We have merely made a

habit of thinking.

Our nature is unbounded bliss, when we think of

something, anything, attention is turned away from our

nature on to the object, so the spontaneous awareness

of joy is obstructed, clouded over by thought.

A finger can point at the Moon without being the Moon. (As the old

saying goes... if you want to see the Moon, stop looking at the

pointing finger!)

I guess u r right.

As I read in recent issue of The Ramana Way, a

magazine from Bangalore, an article by Dr Sarada,

Bhagavan points out:

Thinking is not our nature. We have really made a

habit of thinking.......

......Our nature is unbounded bliss, when we think of

something, anything, attention is turned away from our

nature on to the object, so the spantaneous awareness

of joy is obstructed, clouded over by thought.

Dear Sri Sri Suri,

Tears, nothing but tears!

Participation in this illusion solves nothing! Understanding this illusion,

as integral, solves everything!

Please forgive me...I shall get back to you.
