Guest guest
Actually Vicki I was not only primarily referring to the matter of sexuality (though it is one of the most poignant one in case of young people) but also other pleasures such as partying, watching some action movie, socialising.I was not able to reconcile the introspective method of contemplating on 'Who Am I as taught by Sri.Ramana with these actions which seemed quite natural nay even necessary in youth as surely you will agree is the general attitude. But now after the group feedback and a bit of contemplation of my own I realize that all of the above is only transitory but till such time as the resistance of the pleasure principle becomes natural one need not be overtly unnerved by it and avoid it.Some amount of restraint would help as Ramana himself has advocated that abstinence is one of the aids to yoga.I feel our efforts to reduce the attractions of the above should definitely be pursued as much as possible though by nature being humans we will definitely fall a prey to the above at various times. We should not feel guilty and give the guilt feeling any importance but remember that the bottom line is the self.At this point I would like to add that if somebody is lucky enough to have had transcended the above mundance things(for a westerner it could possibly be surprisingly sometimes easier as he could very easily and rightly so come to the conclusion that the above is very much transitory given the lifestyle that he is exposed to at a very early age and being confronted with the issue especially in the event of heartbreak, betrayal, at a very early age ,etc) then surely he has come closer to the goal. I also like to add that simply reading all your mail has been spiritally elevating for me whatever maybe the content.I also felt that bringing to the fore certain extreme issues would help all as very often we are more alike others than we think though we often believe that we are unique creations indispensable to mankind. regards to all, Anand. Guest guest
Again, I want to thank Anand for bringing up questions about how to deal with real world issues in the context of Ramana Maharshi's teachings. I find it helpful because I am fine when I can sit down calmly and read a book like "Talks with Ramana Maharshi". Then I have trouble stopping the thoughts and doing self-inquiry when I need to deal with people. And I need to deal with other people in many complex ways. But such discussions could quickly run too far afield for many other group members. I hope that the group can continue to try and match up Sri Ramana's teachings with newly raised (though certainly not new) obstacles to practice. But I would certainly agree to narrowing the scope of the discussions rather than lose this wonderful egroup. I am sorry if I was too off-subject by bringing in ideas from someone who is a Buddhist. I don't believe that the points I brought into the discussion were at odds with anything Sri Ramana might have said, but I understand that others may feel it inappropriate. I may be naive about this and I'm sorry about that. Tom
Guest guest
Dear Tom, Provided we can keep our focus on Bhagavan's teachings there is no need to apologise for talking about Buddhist ideas or indeed any others'. >Then I have trouble stopping the > thoughts and doing self-inquiry when I need to deal with people. And I need > to deal with other people in many complex ways. The practice of atmavicara should be continuous. No need to stop in the midst of daily life. If one forgets, simply take it up again when one remembers. Eventually the enquiry becomes a constant. Guest guest
Hi Anand, I happened to see your postings. The one thing wich makes the difference is the intensity one has for Bhagavan's teachings or in other words intensity of love towards Bhagavan. So the priority place an important role in your actions. As a youngster , one might feel that the pleasures (what ever you think off) seems to be the highest priority. So it is natural that one falls prey to it. But consider a situation where one is in deep love with some one, apart from his (her) loved ones, all the other things becomes unimportant. Such is the power of love. If one is in love with Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi, all the other things what ever work he performs gets done as it should be and the focus remains in 'I'.
