verse 2

Bhagavan, what is the paramount duty of a human being caught up in the

cycle of births and deaths? Please decide on one and expound it to me.

verse 3

Bhagavan replied, 'For those desiring the highest, discovering

one's own true nature is most important. It is the basis of all

actions and their fruits.'

Commentary

To be in one's own true nature is described as being in the 'sahaja'

or natural state. ... It is 'natural' because it is inherent. It is a state

of bliss in which consciousness shines in all its fullness. ...

Ramana also gives the reason why it must be rgegarded as the most

essential duty. It is the fruit of all actions since all spiritual practices

have

as their goal Self-knowledge. That is the highest. Further, every action

is in search of happiness and one truly finds it in the natural state.

It is the basis of actions for, actions are possible only because of the

mind being ignited by consciousness.
