Guest guest
Dear friends , to add to this discussion i have just come across the following verses from the garland which seem apposite 590 Dear Friends , I have come across these verses from the Garland which seem apposite in this discussion One is food oneself,Not knowing this If one imagines that one eats it , One is consumed by food and then Becomes but food for an insatiable hunger. 591 The food we eat eats us ,Those who know not This truth desire and eagerly enjoy Earthly pleasure thinking that they eat it While in truth they are being eaten by it . P>S>An appropriate grace before meals is "to eat without ego is Ramana's prasad" Regards to all Alan Everything you'll ever need on one web page from News and Sport to Email and Music Charts http://uk.my. Guest guest
Dear Alan, food - from another aspect as becoming food fit for God/the Self: Sri Ramana once said to one of the ashram cooks: "You must cover your vegetables when you cook them. Then only will they keep their flavour and be fit for food. It is the same with the mind. You must put a lid over it and let it simmer quietly. Then does a man become food fit for God to eat." (Sampurnamma in: Ramana Smrti, 1st ed.) Guest guest
Dear Alan, Yes, yes, wonderful. All these food metaphors are from the Upanishads. Have you discovered the Taittiriya Upanishad yet? The final two verses: .. I am the food, I am the food, I am the food; .. I am the eater, I am the eater, I am the eater; .. I am the link between, I am the link between, .. I am the link between. .. .. I am the first among the visible and the invisible. .. I existed before the gods. I am the navel of .. immortality. Who gives me, protects me. I .. am food; who refuses to give me, I eat as food. .. .. I am this world and I eat this world. Who knows .. this, knows. There are intellectual histories of the Upanishads that explain these metaphors in terms of the older Vedic ritual religion, in which food was sacrificed to the gods by burning it in fire. Hence the ego is food, its renunciation is sacrifice, meditation (tapas) is fire, the result is realization, the identity of atman and Brahman is the identity of food and eater, etc. Intellectual stuff, it seems. But when we think of what food must have meant in ancient times, when people were so poor that death from starvation was common -- does it not bring tears to the eyes? For years, Bhagavan was the head cook at Sri Ramanasramam. He woke every morning at 2 am to cut vegetables. Does it not bring tears to the eyes?
