Who is the actor?

I once had a long discussion with the great Vedic scholar

Ganapati Muni in my cave.

The Muni was a Mantra Siddha.

"Namah-Sivaya" the famed and potent Mantra

of five letters was his favourite Mantra, which he practiced for many years.

By virtue of this he found a real master in Ramana. He knew already that

he was not the body or the mind but the Atman which is the 'I'

in the hearts's cave.

However, he was moved by his passion for the freedom of

our country. I too had nostalgic memeories of my participation

in the freedom movement.

We both decided on a plan which would invoke divine shakti

for securing the freedom of our country.

We planned to perform a big Yagna with Vedic Mantras to

awaken the soul forces of the masses.

We put this proposition to the Maharshi.

The Maharshi heard the plans quietly and became silent.

Muni:

"We are up for a great action that will do good to millions.

Please advice."

Maharshi:

"We? Action? Who is the Actor? Is it ego or God?"

Just then the proof of Upadesa Saram came and Muni was

asked to correct it. The answer to our impatient expectations

was found in the third verse which reads thus:

"The seeds of Karma sprout into pangs of birth and death.

They stampede freedom.

Karma is insentient. It fructifies by divine will.

Karma is not the master. So rise above the desire to act this

way or that and get into the freedom of inner blis."

The Muni understood the significance of the message.

However he asked:

"The Gita says act for the unity and felicity of humanity.

Even God who has nothing to do or achieve acts all the time.

Then who can be actionless? Impelled by nature everyone acts."

Maharshi replied:

"True. Men are impelled to action by vasanas and sankalpas.

They are potentialities of action; seeds of desires.

Your acts must lead you Godward."

Muni:

"I want something concrete.

What about the country and its freedom?

Maharshi sat erect. His lotus eyes emitted sparks of wisdom.

He was silent, serene, majestic - the whole atmosphere was bound

with the spell of his vibrating presence. Silence! Silence!

The Muni understood, bowed and went home.

My mind was lost in silence.

So I sat in speechless meditation.
