"When there is no 'I' thought there can be no other thought. When other thoughts

arise, ask, "To Whom? To me? Where from does this 'I' arise?' Thus diving

inwards, if one traces the source of the mind and reaches the Heart, one becomes

the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. There is no more dreaming of such as in and

out, right and wrong, birth and death, pleasure and pain, light and darkness, O

boundless ocean of Grace and Light, Arunachala, dancing the dance of stillness

in the dancing Hall of the Heart."

Practicing the direct path of Ramana one has to remember that Ramana was sharing

his own experience, of the day of enlightenment, and stressing that it can be

experienced by everyone with an indrawn mind in search of its source. A look

once again on that epoch making date July 17, 1896 would throw much light on the

path. Facing the overwhelming fear of death Ramana passionately enquired into

his true identity, into the question of the nature of 'I' enquiry. Reality was

given to the enquiry by putting aside the body as if it were a corpse.

Immediately, there was an upsurge of the feeling of 'I' distinct and apart from

the dead body. Enquiring further he discovered that the 'I' was a current, a

force or center. Thought it existed in connection with the body it was

independent of the rigidity or activity of the body.

Based on this experience he later explained to his disciples and seekers that

the physical location of this current is on the right hand side of the chest,

two digits from the center. He termed it the 'spiritual heart' to distinguish it

from the physical heart on the left side. Just as the physical heart pumps blood

through arteries, the energy of the 'I' consciousness of the divine current is

channeled through 'nadis', first to the mind and from there to the body.
