Guest guest
Namaste! Thak you for this post bringing a lovely episode form the life of a great devotee. Humphreys was fanning Bhagavan and suddenly thought of something and stopped fanning. Bhagavan turned and looked into Humphrey's eyes. For a few seconds or so both looked at each other and nothing was said. Then both laughed heartily. < I think the above episode is from the glorious life of Sadhu SArunachala (Major Chadwick) who arrived at Arunachala in 1935 and did not stir out of its proximity (during his bodily presence from Novemeber 1935 till April 1962). Sri Frank Humphreys who was the first western visitor recorded to have had the darshan and upadesa of Bhagavan visited Him during 1911-12. His first visit to Bhagavan is reported to have taken place in Novemeber 1911. In the book "Day by day with Bhagavan - From the diary of A Devaraja Mudaliyar", the above episode is described (as entry dated 31-3-1945). I have quoted below from that book. "A few day ago, one night when Bhagavan, after supper, was resting on his cot in the verandah, east of the hall, something funny took place. Chadwick was sitting behind Bhagavan's back. Soon after Bhagavan took his seat and leaned on the cushions, Chadwick from behind stealthily and unnoticed fanned Bhagavan. When Bhagavan turned and looked, Chadwick withdrew the fan and remained still. When Bhagavan turned his face south, Chadwick resumed fanning again. Bhagavn turned round and Chadwick stopped. Bhagavan was wondering how he got the breeze. Chadwick then laughed out and Bhagavan joined the laughter." > The concept of Supreme Being in embodied form has to be felt personally and realized intuitively and directly. < Indeed! Beautifully said! Recall the words Sri Arthur Osborne! " And then one day a sudden vivid reminder awoke in me: The link with Formless Being? But He is the Formless Being! I began to apprehend the meaning of His Jnana and understand why devotees addressed Him simply as 'Bhagavan' ...." Thank you dear Sri Mano for bringing this wonderful episode into attention. Are we all not His fans? Are we trying to fan Him with our words, trying to cool the Infinte Fire of Knowledge (Gnanagni). May the Grace of this Gnanagni burn all our illusory existence to ashes and grant us deliverance by wearing it on His forehead. om gurave namah Yours in Sri Bhagavan, suri Catch all the cricket action. Guest guest
shows how unreliable memory can be.. thanks much for correcting not only the devotee involved but also the details of the episode... this body/mind/intellect/personality wants to surrender to Him completely but, on the one hand, the mind finds its attachments too strong to cut and, on the other, the intellect wonders if it isn't too arrogant to surrender what does not belong to one. in tamil, they say 'kadai thengaayai eduththu vazhippillaiyaarukku udaiththaan' (or "grabbed the coconut from the shop (freely or without paying any money) and offered it to the wayside lord vinayaka"); love...
