Guest guest
'Aasha hi paramam dukkham, nairaashyam paramam sukham' meaning desire is the root of all suffering and desirelessness is synonymous with happiness. Guest guest
Dear Shyam and Alan: thanks for the postings... in my understanding, it appears Maharshi's words addresses the basic issue and the 'how' of it whereas the sanskrit verse talks about the results or consequence of the basic issue (or the 'what' of it). The latter says if you don't have desire you will be ever happy. Does not elaborate 'how' not to have desires for worldly objects. outwardness results in the thinking that objects are the basis for man's happiness; this in turn creates attachments to objects and worldly concepts ; and that makes him develop desire for those worldy objects and the consequent misery in seeking/getting/fear of loosing/loosing the objects desired. inwardness thru dispassion and enquiry, on the other hand, shows the impermanence of happiness from objects; this takes care to wipe out the desire (for objects) instead of suppressing it; thus with a pure mind one is able to gradually perceive the bliss of something that is permanent and omnipresent. Thus, Mahrshi's words addresses the root cause for misery. Alan's further posting below confirms and extends the concept of impermanent projections on something that is permanent. For me as a householder, it helps a lot to have an attitude of "trusteeship" as opposed to one of "ownership" especially mingling with people who have stronger attachments to worldly objects including relationships. love......
