om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya

The revealed Mahavakyas Œprajnanam Brahma (ŒConsciousness is Brahman¹), from

Aitareya Upanishad, reveals the nature of the Self; Œaham brahmasmi¹ (ŒI am

Brahman¹), which is found in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad reveals the source of

the enquiry; Œtat tvam asi¹ (ŒThat Thou Art¹) is found in the Chandogya

Upanishad; this is the statement Guru Ramana reiterates again and again. Œayam

Atma brahma¹ (ŒThis Atman is Brahman¹), this is found in the Mandukya

Upanishad; this identifies our very Being with Brahman.

note: we can split the sanskrit 'tat tvam asi' as 'tattvam asi' (You are Truth). :)

Ever Yours in Sri Bhagavan,

Miles

Dear Gabriele my response to Sri Bhattathiry's posting is that the Who Am I

?Enquiry is a great

gift from Ramana and an invitation to actually experience these great

Statements eventually ,

rather than just to provide a verbal answer to this Question .All love in the

joy of atma vichara

Alan

.

Dear Bhattathiry,

could you please translate these answers. The 3. and 4. for example

are not known to me.

1. You are That

2. I am Brahman ...

Can you say a little bit more about?

"You are That" is a kind of statement one finds often in the teaching

of modern Advaita teachers in a very superficially meaning - so my

impression.

But what are they really for in the old scriptures?

Every comment from everyone is welcome.

Om Sri Ramanaya Namah

Dear Guruji

If you go through the following I think that God will make you understand what you seek for.

THE ESSENCE OF HINDU SCRIPTURES.

1. Please know that God is within you.

2 God is infinite love and peace.

3. God is the eternal light and joy that shine the whole universe.

4. People should rise to the occasion to do their duty.

5. People should reach the height and glory of God’s supreme presence.

6. The feeling that I and mine should be given up and see every thing equal.

7. Have an elevated thinking.

8. Remember God in the beginning, in the middle, and in the end for all ventures.

9. Be humble, pure, simple, and innocent and God is yours.

10. God in the form of love reside in everybody’ heart and be conscious of this at all times

Then your thoughts, words and actions will be of love.

11. The light of God will always illuminate the heart and light only can be seen inside and outside.

12. Come out of the darkness of ignorance enter into the light of knowledge then

only we can feel the presence of God the light of all lights.

13. Let all our actions be as per the directions of God within us.

14. Ego should be avoided to allow everything to be done at the will of God.

15. God is the only reality, truth, and live for God alone.

16. Detachment to perishable things and attachment to only God will give peace of mind.

17. Desire for material things is the cause for all sorrows.

18. Taking more than one’s requirement will ultimately give grief.

19. Acquire knowledge which can’t be stolen or lost.

20. Enjoy always the sunshine of God’s splendor and glory.

21. Remember always God and live in tune with him.

22. Be happy and calm in all situations.

23. See, hear, and speak only good things,

23. Serve the needy and sick wholeheartedly.

24. Total surrender to God will give peace of mind.

25. Remember always the God’s grace for all achievements..

26. Avoid self praise and say only good things about others.

27. See everybody with respect irrespective of caste color and creed.

28. Anger, lust and ego are the only enemies.

29. Purify the heart for the God to sit in.

30. There is no greater virtue than humility, no vice greater than pride.

31. Be sincere in all works, work is worship.

32. Make God your friend, philosopher and guide.

33. Don’t get dejected in failure and fall, God’s grace will be upon us.

34. Always you are one with God and different from Him.

35. Like a flower give always the perfume of love and joy.

36. Pray for the awareness that always you may be in Him and He in you.

37. Remember always that everything in the Universe belongs to God, nothing is ours

38. We have got this birth at the will of God and we are on our way to Him.

39. Know that our goal is to rest in peace with God.

40. Always remember that we are the immortal spirit.

41. Chanting the name of God will save us from fear, doubt and anxiety.

42. Supreme knowledge is ultimate devotion to God.

43. What ever we do will be seen by the God.

44. Overeating, earning money by unlawful means, desire for others property are our weakness.

45 .We are all safe in the hands o god.

46. God manifesting Himself as a person; the object of worship of the bhaktas.

By worshipping God as a person, devotees are able to assume human-like

relationships with God, for example: God as parent, devotee as child; God as

Lord, devotee as servant. It is also much easier for many people to develop

love toward God when He is regarded as a person. Such love is capable of

triggering a spiritual awakening once it is a pure, selfless love.

47. In this kaliyuga Chant always the name of God.

48. God can assume any form to protect the devotees.

49. To serve the devotees is equal to serve the God.

50.Awake, arise and do your duty justifiably . God will be always with you.

OM RAMANAYA NAMAH

PART 1"There are two "I"-s: the ego and Atman. Atman reveals itself as one's

true self to the person who is capable of getting above the "I", "me", and

"mine".

The Upanishads

Think of a mirror. The sun reflects in it without the mirror doing anything for

this but to remain pure and clear. If we compare the mind with a mirror, we

will instantly realize that as soon as the mind is ready, the sun of the Divine

Consciousness will shine in it. The technique we will present in the following

offers a perspective of the existential state we are in and allows us to

understand better the inner "buttons" we need to press in order to grow

spiritually. Performed with perseverance, this technique allows us the access

to a state of "detached witness" that will make us act and react differently in

the situations of life. Before engaging in this technique, it is important that

we understand WHO really wants to change inside of us, and WHICH is the center

of our being. We may have the surprise of noticing that until at that moment

we did not experience such a state of witness in which all our actions are

spontaneously analyzed and directed from a spiritual perspective.A number of

ephemeral and often contrasting personalities resides inside each of us, with

which we identify in turns. These "hypostasis" of our personality have distinct

features: some are merry, some are satisfied, some are dissatisfied, some wish

to study, other wish to go in a holiday, some are enthusiastic and other

recalcitrant. Therefore we cannot speak of a coherent personality, that unifies

synthetically and permanently these aspects, a personality we may associate with

our name and with the idea of "I". This is the reason for which it is

practically impossible for someone to say: "I, John Smith, want to transform."

We cannot make such a commitment as we do not have an unique "I", but instead

we have a number of changing, moving small "I"-s, which depend on innumerable

exterior laws and influences; there are "I"-s that are stronger than others and

that may give the impression of a unique personality. Each of these "I"-s

reaches the surface of our consciousness and takes temporary hold of us, acting

and speaking for us. This is the tragedy of mankind, because these ephemeral

"I"-s determine actions that will generate new karma-ic bonds; the problem is

that our other "I"-s, not so strong and more dispersed will not find the best

strategy to control our destiny. Thus, our existence may be said to resemble to

a cluster of sparks, when each spark lasts for few seconds, and the entire

cluster less than a minute. Nonetheless, behind these, the Supreme Reality is

not momentary, nor ephemeral. The technique you are about to learn will guide

you in the "intimacy" of Reality, making you understand in a direct manner that

while living this existence we have to do the things we have to do without any

ego interference. However, our balance needs to be dynamic, and based on the

right action. The rigid, stereotype gestures and inner attitudes will not help

us grow spiritually. With complete detachment from all these, we need to rely

entirely on the clarity of our synthetic mind, which may be a unification of

the multiple, transient personalities. "As two golden birds sitting on the

same tree, the ego and the self, intimate friends, abide within the same

body. The first eats the sweet and sour fruits from the tree of life, while the

later watches everything with detachment. As long as you think you are the ego,

you are still in the world of sorrow. If you realize you are the Self, the

Master of Life, you will be freed from all these. When you realize you are the

source of the light, you transcend the duality and enter the state of unity."

PART 2HOW TO PERFORM THIS TECHNIQUEIn order to perform this simple and

effective technique we need a mechanical hand watch. We should take it off and

place it so that it reaches the height of our eyes. Then, in a state of

detachment, and calmness, we will begin to stare at the secondary hand of the

watch, without any moments of pause. At the same time, as you stare of the

secondary hand of the watch, focus your attention on your inner state. In this

manner, you will perform the synthesis of two apparently opposing attitudes,

the expression of two opposed tendencies of your mind: an outward attitude,

expressed through the staring at the watch, and an inner-directed one,

expressed through the focus on your state of mind. Along with this double

focus, we have to focus also on the idea: "I am...(your name) and I am here

now. I am." We will try - as much as possible - to keep our mind focused only

on this idea, while we follow detached and focused the secondary hand of the

watch. We stay perfectly aware of our person, of our name, of the place we are

in. The mental repetition of our name should not lead to a superficial

identification with our ephemeral "I", but instead it should awake in us the

consciousness of our unitary, divine consciousness. For a better understanding

of this technique, we mention that we do not need to keep in mind this idea in

an "obstinate", egoistic manner. Ultimately, this mental focus on the idea of

"I" should become even non-verbalized, "felt", perceived intuitively. This

exercise requires more than a simple thought about our existence, but the

awareness of it. We should go beyond the thoughts and concepts to the direct,

mysterious, and absolute knowledge of our existence. At this level, we will

notice that this revelation is perfectly accessible to us, and due to a

spiritual intuition, this experience will awaken inside of us something bright,

extremely important and real. This very simple and important technique that will

help anyone to get a step closer to the revelation of one's self, makes us

discover that it is perfectly possible for each of us to awaken and reach the

real awareness of the Self. Even at this level, we will have different

thoughts. The images, feelings, aspirations will keep on coming and going, just

as before, but we will perceive SIMULTANEOUSLY a different perception, just as a

witness takes part detached and uninvolved to an event. This

witness-consciousness will become a permanence in our lives and it will awaken

and amplify inside of us a supra-mental force meant to alter, analyze and even

stop the flow of thoughts, images and so on. This force is strong enough to

catalyze the revelation of the divine self, Atman. Only at this stage, we may

say that we have a stable inner structure, like an axis of our being, bringing

along a real and perfectly aware consciousness of ourselves and of the world.

Thus, being detached and preserving this witness-consciousness, we may say that

we are on the right path in distinguishing between the Supreme Self (Atman) and

the illusion of this world.
