Guest guest
One of the things I came to see is that enlightenment only becomes available when it has been accepted that it cannot be achieved. Doctrines, processes and progressive paths which seek enlightenment only exacerbate the problem they address by reinforcing the idea that the self can find something that it presumes it has lost. It is that very effort, that investment in self-identity, that continuously recreates the illusion of separation from oneness. This is the veil that we believe exists. It is the dream of individuality. http://www.theopensecret.com/extracts.htm
Guest guest
Dear Alton , my view on this is that the effort of Self Enquiry is aimed at removing the cause of ignorance and not reinforcing any idea whatsoever -in fact it removes all other concepts about the 'me'. The effort of Atma Vichara is undertaken by the Ego to find its own Source .It is not a progressive path in the conventional sense , as the idea of making progress is a hindrance ..Without Self Enquiry and relying only on "abandoning effort" you may have a partial awakening ,if there has been adequate previous sadhana, but with the vasanas still active .Self Enquiry is aimed at reducing the vasanas to a state of harmlessness , "a burned out rope".Ramana Maharshi was the gretest Sage since Sankara , he taught by Silence ,and showed devotees the way to Self Realisation through Devotion , Surrender and Self-Enquiry ,tried and tested paths since ancient times. Some of the " no effort school" think they know better .It is a comfortable concept to abandon spiritual practice - but could end up to be a dead end , a parking place , or at worse a sliding back into where the vasanas becoming more active .All of the "new effort school" made considerable efforts themselves until they reached the place where they fouind no more effort was possible for them or needed. As with Ramana , all the necessary effort was possibly made in a previous life . But these cases are rare indeed ,and one can't rely on that supposition.Even making 'no effort'is paradoxically some kind of effort .if God ,Guru or Self wills you to make the effort of Self Enquiry , which is Grace , - nothing is going to prevent it .. Self Enquiry is undoubtedly a powerful tool. All the better when we can utilise it without desire for any result. When it becomes the natural predeliction of the mind who can disagree? Then path and goal truly are found to be one and the same. Ever Yours in Sri Bhagavan, Miles
