Guest guest
Dear Sri Achala, thank you for having posted verse 1 on Upadesa Saram by Sadhu Om. Please continue with posting his translation. In Sri Bhagavan Gabriele ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The fruits of action are transient. Action causes one to fall into the ocean of further action. It obstructs the goal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Commentary: The action referred to in this verse is motivated action desiring particular results. Such actions produce only temporary results. The performance of a good action does not result in lasting happiness. The beneficial force gets exhausted. The fruits are by their very nature passing. For the continuation of a desired end, action has consequently to be without break. Repetition is a must. Apart from this, each action leaves a residual memory, pleasant or unpleasant. Such memories are the seeds of further action. For they leave an inbuilt reservoir of latent thoughts which push the mind to more action on given lines. Desire, action, latent desires, further action would become a ceaseless action momentum. Can such action help to liberate one? For, freedom is the goal of all efforts. The answer is that it will not help and that it would actually have the opposite effect. The goal would be pushed away. The reason is that if the mind is a prisoner of action, it would be impure, purification of the mind is required before it will become quiet and for it to turn within. Hence Ramana suggests in the next verse a different type of action, an action which would be purificatory. If the action is itself dedicated to God and there is no desire for reaping benefits from it, then that very action would become an aid for breaking the karmic shackles. ~~~~~~~~~~~ A.R. The fruit of action haveing perished (by being experienced in the form of pleasure or pain), will as seeds make one fall in to the ocean of action and (hence) will not give liberation. Note: When a seed is planted, it grows into a tree, and the tree in turn yields fruit. But the fruit consists of two parts, namely the edible part and the seeds. Though the edible part of the fruit is eaten, the seeds remain to develop into new trees and yield more fruit. Similar is the case with the fruit of actions or karma-phala. If we do a good action, its fruit will in due course be experienced by us in the form of some pleasure, while if we do a bad action, its fruit will in due course be experienced by us in the form of some pain. By thus being experienced in the form of pleasure or pain, the fruit of an action will perish, like the edible part of a fruit when it is eaten. But haveing perished thus, the fruit of that action will still remain in the form of a seed, that is, in the form of a tendency (vasana) or the liking to do such a action again. Such seeds or tendencies make one fall into the ocean of performing more and more actions. Hence the fruit of actions of any kind cannot give liberation(moksha).
