Guest guest
Turn off the radio. Notice that you exist. Taking another angle of view: In last nights dream, The dream seemed real. If was filled with The dream world and dream people, Your dream self and dream body, Your dream senses and dream emotions. All felt real. Where did the sense of reality come from? Was it from your dream body? Or from your dream senses? Or from your dream mind? Or from your dream intellect? Someone knows the dream? Who knows the dream? Who are you? Guest guest
Dear Alan, Glad that your are finding this worthwhile. This particular meditation has been helpful for me as well. Ramana talks about the three (or four) states, waking, dream, deep sleep (and Turiya). Over the years I have asked Nome about this, and how to use this to help the inquiry. This meditation comes from this. Certainly looking at our own dream state can help in our discrimination. In waking and in dreams we have a body. Where does the sense of reality of the body come from? When looked at this way, it helps one to gain spiritual knowledge of oneself. Likewise with senses and emotions. These seem real in both dreams and in the waking state. What is different about these two states? What is the same in these two states? This is a hint at where the Reality comes from that we superimpose onto both states. In my own dreams now I am trying to 'catch' dream thoughts. (and maybe try dream meditation and inquiry). So far I have not had success, but I have planted this seed. Again, the reason that I do so is to help in my own discrimination. As I am better able to discriminate what is Unchanging from all that changes, my inquiry goes deeper. Using this approach, I am also starting to look at deep sleep to see what is constant in that state as well. Not much progress here yet, but it does help me see the my identification with mind. Mind is active during the waking state and dreams, but not during deep sleep. I still exist in deep sleep. Can I be this mind? Guest guest
Hi Richard, I wanted to thank you for elaborating on your meditation on the dream state. I've been enjoying your meditations, but that one just went over my head. I didn't understand. Now I do. How beautiful to see the various ways we experience --- what? states of mind? And that seeing the differences leads us to that that does not change! I have been learning through experience about waking states of mind and noting the differences there between thought, lots of thought, less thought and sometimes even what seems to be only awareness. I loved your second meditation where you said when you see a thought arising that you don't have to finish it. What a sense of freedom! I joined this group because I saw a picture of Ramana on the website and I was drawn into his eyes or into quiet. That never happened to me so obviously before. It has been quite fascinating listening to the conversations between the participants and learning more about Ramana's gift to the world. Guest guest
Dear Linda, Thank you for your comments. It is wonderful that Ramana's eyes have drawn you to him. This is Grace at work. This book was rattling around in my mind for a couple of years. A few weeks ago it just had to come out. I feel like it is still in draft form, so I am particularly interest in comments as to what is useful (and what is not). When I first wrote it, I tried to have all meditations. Then found that I needed to add a few sections to provide the reader with appropriate context to get the best use of the meditations. Maybe this is an area where I need to add a little instruction. I am trying to avoid much instruction. There are wonderful teachers. And since I am just another seeker, it is not really appropriate for me to do much teaching. What I am trying to do with the book is to provide a way for those such as you to start a spiritual practice. I have been blessed with an enlightened teacher who I have studied with for more than ten years. I am trying to make available this teaching, in a form that I have actually practiced. Practice is most important. It is in the practice that we have the opportunity to see what is deeper than this mind and ego. Now notice that when a question was asked, answers were provided. For many seekers this is an important process. If you have a living Self- realized teacher, then ask the questions. If you do not, then, if I may, a couple of recommendations: First, see if you can find a copy of the full Indian version of "Talks with Ramana Maharshi." This book provides much instruction, and the words of Ramana are powerful and deep. You can find this (among other places) at http://www.satramana.org/html/sat_book_catalog.htm. Another point is that you can use this newsgroup to share your understanding, your practice and ask questions. Asking your questions gives you another way to keep moving deeper. This also gives you another chance to move past your own ego-created concepts. Welcome to this group.
