Guest guest
Control of the mind is of two kinds, its lulling and its destruction. A lulled mind will rise again but not the one which is destroyed. The mind stilled by breath regulation gets destroyed by persuing a single thought. Commentary to V. 14: In this verse Ramana also makes the point that the quietness of the mind is not an end in itself. Temporary stilling of the mind comes about in the course of spiritual parctice. The period it lasts is of no real consequence but therein also lies a danger if one were to mistake it for the goal. This has been explained by Ramana in 'Crumbs': "One must not allow oneself to be overtaken by such spells of stillness of thought: the moment one experiences this one must revive consciousness and enquire whithin as to who it is that experiences this stillness. While not allowing any thoughts to intrude, he must not at the same time be overtaken by deep sleep." The quietness of the mind must be taken advantage of to pursue the spiritual practice further to the point of Self-abidance. ~~~~~~~~~~~ A.R.
