> A Commentary on Sat-Darshana-Bhashya

> "The Perception of Truth, or

> Reality"

> As Revealed to The World

> By Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

>

> This next series of verses is from the book, Sat-Darshana-Bhashya, which

> itself is in three sections. The first section, "The Talks," is comprised

> of talks, which Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi had with his devotees,

> particularly Devaraj Mudaliar, and including "K," the compiler and author

> of the book. The second section, "Introduction," is an introduction to

> Advaita (non-dual) Reality and is a preparation for the third section, "The

> Commentary." It is comprised of very significant questions pertaining to

> specific aspects of Advaita Vedanta. The subjects addressed are

> categorized with their own special headings in the sections.

>

> The third or last section is The Bhashya, or "Commentary," on Bhagavan Sri

> Ramana Maharshi's "Reality In Forty Verses," or "Truth Revealed." It is

> somewhat different in this publication from all of the other, earlier

> editions of the book published by Sri Ramanasramam. The difference being,

> it includes additional translations of these forty terse verses, giving

> explanations of them beyond that of the original, earlier versions, which

> serve to enhance or expand the meaning given in the original by "K" alone.

> These extracts, and "word-for-word" translations written by different

> direct disciples of the Maharshi, give a more thorough understanding and

> even clearer insight into this important message on Advaita (non-dual)

> Reality, which Sri Bhagavan so graciously shared with the world.

>

> The additional translations used are themselves from other publications

> also published by Sri Ramanasramam. However, this particular format with

> these additional extracts and full translations is entirely new.

> Basically, the extra translations appear in the form of the "appurtenant

> rendering" of the original prose verses, while the extracts are in the form

> of "a synopsis" of each verse.

>

> This augmented version containing the additional verses was compiled and

> arranged by A. (Arunachala) Ramana, an American devotee of Sri Bhagavan,

> who by Sri Bhagavan's grace also himself attained the highest state that

> these verses so succinctly describe or explain. Ramana has not make any

> changes in the English translations used, but rather has used them in their

> original form, choosing to add them to the version given by "K" to better

> clarify the meaning of his own translation. However, in a few instances

> the English itself has been slightly revised to give a clearer rendering of

> the wording for Western readers.

>

> AHAM Publications will soon publish this amended version to be used in

> AHAM's Conscious Curriculum, which is itself is based primarily on the

> spiritual Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi.

>

> THE TALKS ‹ INITIAL DOUBTS

>

> Devotee - You say one can realize the self by a search for it. What is the

> character of this search?

>

> Maharshi - You are the mind or think that you are the mind. The mind is

> nothing but thoughts. Now behind every particular thought there is a

> general thought which is the "I," that is yourself. Let us call this "I"

> the first thought. Stick to this I-thought and question it to find out

> what it is. When this question takes strong hold on you, you cannot think

> of other thoughts.
