Guest guest
Dear Sri Alan, In this verse Bhagavan uses some unique phrases in tamil. What Sri Chadwick has translated as 'the ghost of arrogance' is the tamil phrase "patru madap paiy" (PMP) which literally translates into the ghost (paiy) of attachment (patru) to idealogy (madam - to pronounced with 'a' as 'u' in cup)" The word 'madam' may also be translated to religion, religious idealogy etc. Another phrase used by Bhagavan here is "SuTru pala Sindai vAi nOi" which may be translated as "wandering-many-thoughts-and-mouth-disease" or as "wandering mind and mouth diesease" (WMMD) The third phrase used in this verse by Bhagavan is "SIr (Seer) TEDi ODal" (STO) which may be translated as "Running afer Wealth". The three failings that intellectuals (scholars) need to watch out are, thus the ghost of PMP, the disease of WMMD, and the temptation of STO. Bhagavan has summed up beautifully, the three failings that scholars are prone and from which the uneducated are saved, in this verse. Thank you for this post that gave a wonderful opportunity to dwell on Bhagavan's words. om gurave namah suri Alan Jacobs <alanadamsjacobs (AT) (DOT) co.uk> wrote: Happier the illiterate than theyWho having learningyet cannot win peace. For from the 'ghost of arrogance'they're saved,From the distracted mindand rolling tongueFrom search for praise and wealththey're also saved .Yes ! from many things havethey saved themselves ..Chadwick______________________Want to chat instantly with your online friends? Guest guest
---Dear Suri, thank you for these elucidations ,it shows the value of a Study Group .The Supplement is not widely known and does not seem to have received as much "scholarly' attention as his other works .Perhaps this is ablessing in disguise, bearing in mind the tenor of the verse. ..All love , in His Grace ,Alan > > Dear Sri Alan, > > In this verse Bhagavan uses some unique phrases in tamil. > > What Sri Chadwick has translated as > > 'the ghost of arrogance' > > is the tamil phrase > > "patru madap paiy" (PMP) > > which literally translates into > > the ghost (paiy) of attachment (patru) to idealogy (madam - to pronounced with 'a' as 'u' in > cup)" > > The word 'madam' may also be translated to religion, religious idealogy etc. > > Another phrase used by Bhagavan here is > > "SuTru pala Sindai vAi nOi" > > which may be translated as > > "wandering-many-thoughts-and-mouth-disease" > > or as > > "wandering mind and mouth diesease" (WMMD) > > The third phrase used in this verse by Bhagavan is > > "SIr (Seer) TEDi ODal" (STO) > > which may be translated as > > "Running afer Wealth". > > The three failings that intellectuals (scholars) need to watch out are, thus > > the ghost of PMP, > > the disease of WMMD, > > and the temptation of STO. > > Bhagavan has summed up beautifully, the three failings that scholars are prone and from which > the uneducated are saved, in this verse. > > Thank you for this post that gave a wonderful opportunity to dwell on Bhagavan's words. > > om gurave namah > suri > > Alan Jacobs <alanadamsjacobs wrote: > Happier the illiterate than they > Who having learning > yet cannot win peace. > > For from the 'ghost of arrogance' > they're saved, > > From the distracted mind > and rolling tongue > From search for praise and wealth > they're also saved . > > Yes ! from many things have > they saved themselves . > > Chadwick > > ______________________ > Want to chat instantly with your online friends?
