Guest guest
i once saw a footage with our video satsang group where we watch a variety of videos from different gurus each week. in one of them an elderly bearded american was talking, what seemed to be more new age type of concepts about manifesting our own reality, etc. i asked someone who this person was. he told me the person in the video was ramana. i honestly didn't get it and asked a few times till i realized this person on the video had named himself ramana. someone also mentioned his aham site. now i'm not opposed to anyone calling themselves ramana. i just could not comprehend it at first. i also understand the difficulty of taking up that name and living up to it in our "minds" since he'll be forever compared and judged...and yet i could not help noticing how this american ramana's teachings had very little to do with my impression of reading ramana maharshi's books. again i am not opposed to the artistic licence when it comes to interpreting ramana's teachings either. i wonder what others think in this group about their experience of reading/watching the american ramana. hur RamanaMaharshi, Alan Jacobs <alanadamsjacobs> wrote: > Dear Friends , the enclosed information may be of interest to members .The Self-Inquiry section > is worth a visit ,in my oppinion.Regards to all , Alan > > > > > --- AHAM - Association of Happiness for All Mankind <ahamcntr@a...> wrote: > Dear Alan > Jacobs, > > > > Today, we have opened our new AHAM web site to the world. Guest guest
Dear Hur, I have to say that I would prefer that contemporary teachers NOT take the name "Ramana." To me the teachings of Ramana are revered, and to have another using that name only brings confusion. We have the One, Ramana. That is all we need. We are not two, Richard RamanaMaharshi, "Hur Guler" <hurg> wrote: > i once saw a footage with our video satsang group where we watch a > variety of videos from different gurus each week. in one of them an > elderly bearded american was talking, what seemed to be more new age > type of concepts about manifesting our own reality, etc. i asked > someone who this person was. he told me the person in the video was > ramana. i honestly didn't get it and asked a few times till i > realized this person on the video had named himself ramana. someone > also mentioned his aham site. > > now i'm not opposed to anyone calling themselves ramana. i just > could not comprehend it at first. i also understand the difficulty > of taking up that name and living up to it in our "minds" since he'll > be forever compared and judged...and yet i could not help noticing > how this american ramana's teachings had very little to do with my > impression of reading ramana maharshi's books. again i am not > opposed to the artistic licence when it comes to interpreting > ramana's teachings either. > > i wonder what others think in this group about their experience of > reading/watching the american ramana. > > hur > > > > RamanaMaharshi, Alan Jacobs > <alanadamsjacobs> wrote: > > Dear Friends , the enclosed information may be of interest to > members .The Self-Inquiry section > > is worth a visit ,in my oppinion.Regards to all , Alan > > > > > > > > > > --- AHAM - Association of Happiness for All Mankind > <ahamcntr@a...> wrote: > Dear Alan > > Jacobs, > > > > > > Today, we have opened our new AHAM web site to the world. Guest guest
---Dear Hur , I am not in any way connected with AHAM but admire their publications and the fact that they intoduce people to the basic concepts which may lead to a deeper experience-or not .I gather from hear-say that Ramana[their Leader] from AHAM was given this name by Muktananda who recognised that the Maharshi was his Sat-Guru .He also had experiences which confirmed this for him .I have had no experience of the organisation - they have many members and run retreats , and publish Ramana Literature .They have their own Ashram at Tiru .Sri V.Ganesan visits them .Perhaps other members may wish to add to this information ,as you request .Every best wish ,in Ramana's Grace, Alan Hur Guler <hurg wrote: > i once saw a footage with our video satsang group where we watch a > variety of videos from different gurus each week. in one of them an > elderly bearded american was talking, what seemed to be more new age > type of concepts about manifesting our own reality, etc. i asked > someone who this person was. he told me the person in the video was > ramana. i honestly didn't get it and asked a few times till i > realized this person on the video had named himself ramana. someone > also mentioned his aham site. > > now i'm not opposed to anyone calling themselves ramana. i just > could not comprehend it at first. i also understand the difficulty > of taking up that name and living up to it in our "minds" since he'll > be forever compared and judged...and yet i could not help noticing > how this american ramana's teachings had very little to do with my > impression of reading ramana maharshi's books. again i am not > opposed to the artistic licence when it comes to interpreting > ramana's teachings either. > > i wonder what others think in this group about their experience of > reading/watching the american ramana. > > hur > > > > RamanaMaharshi, Alan Jacobs > <alanadamsjacobs> wrote: > > Dear Friends , the enclosed information may be of interest to > members .The Self-Inquiry section > > is worth a visit ,in my oppinion.Regards to all , Alan > > > > > > > > > > --- AHAM - Association of Happiness for All Mankind > <ahamcntr@a...> wrote: > Dear Alan > > Jacobs, > > > > > > Today, we have opened our new AHAM web site to the world. According to the AHAM website, Arunachala Ramana didn't not give his ownSELF that name; but his guru Yogananda gave him that name. I have not met Sri Arunachala Ramana; but just like you and he and me and we, all is the SELF. There isn't anything to live up to. The idea of distinction is ignorance. Guest guest
thanks miles for posting this interesting article. as much as i try to keep an open mind, i suppose i tend to have a skeptical mind. i remember when i was watching the american ramana's video i was the only one in our group who thought this man's, the american ramana's, new age ideas had very little to do with ramana maharshi's teachings. since i am from turkey originally and was brought up in a more repressed society with conservative values, it's true that i have a bias against the pushy american types, particularly the salesman types and the american ramana sounded like a typical bossy american salesman trying to push new age concepts as advaita. it didn't seem to bother the rest that much but then again i'm about as unenlightened as they come. hur RamanaMaharshi, Miles Wright <ramana.bhakta@v...> wrote: > om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya > > http://www.indyweek.com/durham/2002-10-02/news.html > > Dear Hur, > > In the mail today, I received the above web address, which apparently links > to an interesting article about AHAM. > > Miles. > ========= > > i wonder what others think in this group about their experience of > > reading/watching the american ramana. > > > > hur
Guest guest
Hiya Hur, And it's not just American pushy sales men peddling their "takes" on Advaita. The Indian attempts are no different. Your comment "but then again i'm about as unenlightened as they come", is very interesting. How would you know, Hur?:-) I mean, what is the yardstick that you would use to come to the conclusion either way. - Hur Guler RamanaMaharshi Friday, August 22, 2003 09:43 AM [RamanaMaharshi] Re: Message About AHAM's New Web Site! / american ramana thanks miles for posting this interesting article. as much as i try to keep an open mind, i suppose i tend to have a skeptical mind. i remember when i was watching the american ramana's video i was the only one in our group who thought this man's, the american ramana's, new age ideas had very little to do with ramana maharshi's teachings. since i am from turkey originally and was brought up in a more repressed society with conservative values, it's true that i have a bias against the pushy american types, particularly the salesman types and the american ramana sounded like a typical bossy american salesman trying to push new age concepts as advaita. it didn't seem to bother the rest that much but then again i'm about as unenlightened as they come. hur
Guest guest
om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya Dear Hur, > thanks miles for posting this interesting article. as much as i try > to keep an open mind, i suppose i tend to have a skeptical mind. Wonderful. Scepticism is a fertile soil for vicara. When ahamkara arises doubts about this or that are never far behind. Hold that troublemaker, the mindstuff will disappear. > i remember when i was watching the american ramana's video i was the > only one in our group who thought this man's, the american ramana's, > new age ideas had very little to do with ramana maharshi's > teachings. since i am from turkey originally and was brought up in a > more repressed society with conservative values, it's true that i > have a bias against the pushy american types, particularly the > salesman types and the american ramana sounded like a typical bossy > american salesman trying to push new age concepts as advaita. If his style does not satisfy...why not take to the other Ramana, that one to whom this Group is dedicated. His Teaching is immediate and conclusive. When one, 'by chance', falls into His lap there is no longer any room for doubt. When He grabs you, stop struggling, surrender, then you will, assuredly, escape. He is certainly not pushy...but His pull is, in the end, irresistible. > it didn't seem to bother the rest that much but then again i'm about as > unenlightened as they come. hur Indeed. 'I am not enlightened' ... ' 'He is enlightened' ... 'I am enlightened'. This is the jiva's conceit. Enlightenment, as the concern of the ego, is probably best left alone. Instead, I would just do vicara. Regards, Miles
