Parasara Bhattar's attachment to Srirangam is legendary. This has led to some interesting indicents. adiyEn will recall one interaction of Sri Bhattar with Sri Anandazhvar. Anandazhvar too had great attachment to a divya- desam, but it was Thiruvengadam. At one time, a bhAgavata who had been with Anandazhvar for a while in Thirumalai went to Srirangam. While attending Bhattar's upanyasam there, he happened to sneeze and said "thiruvengadam" immediately. In those days, Srivaishnavas would say the name of some divyadesam after sneezing. Upon hearing this Bhattar remarked "karuvilE thiruvilAdhAr Ar?", recalling Thondaradippodi Azhvar's Thirumalai pasuram 11: oruvillAl Ongu munnIradaiththu ulagankaL uyya seruvilE arakkar kOnais seRRa namsEvaganAr maruviya periya kOyil mathiL thiruvarangamennA karuvilE thiruvilAdhIr! kAlaththaik kazhikkinRIrE Here Azhvar says that only those who do not have the grace of the Lord when they were in their mother's womb would fail to say thiruvarangam at least once. But, for Bhattar this applies not just once but at every opportunity. Needless to say, he was disappointed at not hearing the bhAgavata say thiruvarangam after sneezing. When Anandazhvar heard this, he sent a message to Bhattar stating "veruvAdhAL vAy veruvi vEngadamE enRALO, thiruvarangam enRALO?", refering to Thirumangai Azhvar's Periya Thirumozhi (5.5) on Srirangam, which starts as "veruvAthAL vAyveruvi vEngadamE vEngadamE enginRALAl". Here, the mother of the girl laments about the state of her daughter who is tortured by her separation from the Lord. She says that her daughter who is separated from Him cries out vEngadamE vEngadamE, even though the pasuram is dedicated to Srirangam. How interesting are anubhavams of our acharyas! Guest guest
sRi: Srimathe Ramanujaya namha Adiyen wish to add few points to Smt Sumithra's Mail, it was an excellent anecdote to show the connection between SriPaRasara Bhattar and SriRangam. When he got in to the situation to clarify about the Peria Thirumozhi pAsuram , where our Thirumangai Alwar brings in Thiruvengadamudayan in the SriRangam pAsuram, we can see the great "Meda Vilasam " of Our Bhattar, he replied , look at the pAsuram, its the ThayAr Pasuram. Here as Sumitra mentioned , the whole pathigam was the Thayar pAsuram , so it sonly the thAyar of Tirumgai Alwar who said Thiruvengadam in Thiruvarangam pAsuram and not our beloved Alwar !!! you can see the attachment of our Bhattar with SriRangam and his Meda Vilasam in his reply.. This is only an eg, and if you see all the conversations between our Nanjeeyar and Bhattar, it was so great , like Nanjeeyar will ask normal doubts as neechan like Adiyen can think about and our Bhattar will give fitting reply which will clear all doubts and with a stich of humour also.. This is indeed true. The interaction of Bhattar with Nanjeeyar gave raise to many outstanding explanations and ideas. Nanjeeyar was a great disciple - one who was not afraid to question his acharya on many issues. And Bhattar was adept at answering them. One can probably record a book on all their interactions and it would make great reading and provide grand insights into our sampradhayam. One such episode came to adiyEn's mind and I will share it with the bhAgavatas. Once Bhattar was doing an upanyasam on Periya Thirumozhi and was talking about the pasurams on Pullambhuthankudi. Specifically, he was talking about pasuram 5.1.2 which ends as paLLachcheRuvilkayalugaLap pazhanakkazhaniyathanuLpOy puLLuppiLLaikkiraithEdum puLLampoothankudithAnE Here Azhvar is describing the natural beuaty of this divyadesam. There is a ditch next to the fields which is filled with water and many fish are moving about. Here a bird is watching and searching for a fish for its young. Such is the natural abundance of this place. At this point Nanjeeyar asked Bhattar "ugaLAdhiruppa thEduvAnEn?" That is, if there are so many fish moving about, why would the bird have to search? Bhattar replied: "Since the place was rich in water and food, all the fish had grown to a large size - so large that they were barely able to move about. So, the bird should not have to search for food - if it was looking for food for itself. But as it was looking for food for its young (piLLaikku irai), it wanted some small fish to feed them. That's why it was searching". It is said by our acharyas there was none to ask questions like Nanjeeyar and that there was none to answer them like Bhattar.
