Dear BhakthAs:

Due to temporary lapse in subscription,

I did not recieve the June issue (Aani)

of SrI Nrusimha PriyA. I am also unabe to access

SrI RanganAtha PaadhukA, where HH SrImath Andavan

has recommended July 13 for Yajur Upakarm.

Hence I do not have access to the references .

SrIman ShyAm Sunder of SrImath Andavan Aasramam

summarized the recommended procedures for SrImath

Andavan Thiruvadis.

SrI P.Dileepan has summarized below

the recommendations for Ahobila matam SishyAs.

He posted this article in a sister list,

which might be useful to number of you,

who have written to me on this subject.

The SrIrangam Temple JyOthishAs , who computed

the panchAngam for SrI RanganAtha Temple this year

have identified Aug 11 as the day to perform

UpAkarma and Aug 12 for Gayathri Japam for

those in East Coast USA.

Saama Upaakarma is set for Aug 30.

Gayathri Japam is same for every one (Aug 12).

PLEASE FOLLOW YOUR ACHAARYA'S RECOMMENDATIONS

The ahnika grantham blessed by HH SrImath Azahgiya Singar

has 36 pages about the UpAkarma , when it is to be done

and cited plenty of PramANams from Apaasthampar,

Vaidhika Saarvabhoumar (Gruhya Rathnam).. He has

quoted the observances duirng previous years based

on PourNami Sanghava Kaalam .

The key conclusions based on the 12 Naazhikai

limit for PourNami-Pratamai Sandhi decide in

this analysis about performing UpAkarma and

Gayathri Japams on the same day or successive days for

Yajur Vedis. SrIman Dileepan has summarized

below details for the observance and its timing.

INPUT FROM SRI DILEEPAN:

*************************

For the USA Yajur Upakarma this year is on August 11th and Gayathri

Japam is on August 12th. This is for everyone residing in north America.

For India both Yajur Upakarma and Gayathri Japam are on Aug 12th,

except for PraTama Upakarma (Thalai Avani Avittam). In India,

Pradama Upakarma (Thalai Avani Avittam) must be done on July 13th.

But they also must do Gayathri Japam only on Aug 12th with

everyone else.

The day before Gayathri Japam is Upavasam, i.e. palahram.

Sri Nrisimha Priya states that for India both Upakarma and Gayathri japam

must be observed on Aug 12th. This is because Pournami is present after

12 nAzhigai, but PraTamai commences 12 vinadi after that. However,

due to the presence of praTamai during this time, those performing Prthhama

Upakarma (Thalai Avani Avittam) ONLY must perform it on July 13th, but

perform Gayathri Japam with everyone else on Aug 12th. Once again all

of this is only for India and perhaps points of east of India.

If you are located too far east from India , Gayathri Japam may have

to be observed only on August 13th if PraTamai commences after 15 nAzhigai

from Sun rise.

I am working on a web based tithi/star calculator. Hope to get it on line

in the next couple of days. Once this is on line the tithi span for everyday

can be compiled for any location. Then, just apply the rule given below to

figure out when to perform what.

The rule:

[1] For Upakarma, Powrnami must be present after 12 nAzhigai. Gayathri

japam is done on PraTamai, the next day.

[2] If PraTamai commences after 12 nAzhigai but before 15 nAzhigai, then

both Upakarama and Gayathri Japam must be performed the same day. When

this happens, Prathama Upakarma ONLY must be done on previous Powrnami.

For a detailed explanation refer to Ahnika Grantham written by Srimad

Azhagiya Singar in poorvasramam.

Dear SrI Ravisankar:

The strength of these lists is the opportunity

to learn from each other and develop genuine respect

for our traditions . Thanks for the insight in to

the UpakarmA timing this year from yet another perspective.
