Guest guest
Dear Sri Sudarshan, I have heard many Srivaishnava acharyas and scholars refer to Sri Ramanuja as Swami Ramanujar. In fact, I have even heard them say that the single title "Swami" refers only to Ramanujar, whereas for others we have to add their names - such as Swami Desikar or Swami Manavala Mamunigal and so on. This is similar to "Azhvar" refering to Nammazhvar only, "kOyil" refering to Srirangam only, and so on. In fact, at Sriperumbudur to date everyone refers to Ramanujar as just "Swami". adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan --- "M.K.Sudarshan" <sampathkumar_2000 wrote: > ... > Just as Sage VyAsa was addressed as "bhagavAn" and > not "swAmi", so > too do we SriVaishnavites, who regard Sri > RamanujAchArya as our > foremost 'guru', we do not ever refer to him as > "Swami Ramanuja". > More often we refer to him as "bhagavath ramanuja"; > or else, we refer > to him with some other hallowed honorific such as > "uDayavar" or > "bhAshyakArar", never at all "swAmi". > ... ===== Azhvar Emperumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Sharanam adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan

I was really not aware of this before. I have always heard only the popular -- "bhagavath ramanuja". Sri Perumbudur being Ramanuja's birth-place might have of course its own local customs. Guest guest
Jai Ramanuja, It is rightly said that SRI RAMANUJA is addressed as SWAMI.Swa means the belonging & swami means the owner. This gets translated as UDAYAVAR in Tamil meaning one who owns the UDAIMAI.Hence SRI RAMANUJA is addressed popularly as UDAYAVAR by srivaishnavites. dasan On Wed, 23 Jul 2003 Sudarshan M.K. wrote : >, madhurakavi dAsan ><mkavidasan> wrote: > > I have heard many Srivaishnava acharyas and scholars > > refer to Sri Ramanuja as Swami Ramanujar.
