Guest guest
Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, Recently in a chat with my colleague, he said a proverb during the course of the chat. That was "ariyum sivanum onnu , ariyaadhavan vaayile maNNu". This proverb or adage simply did not go out of my mind for some time. Then came the explanation, which was said by HH sri chandra sEkarEndhra saraswathi swamigal, which is just some thing great to share with you all. ari - is hari - the lord sriman naaraayaNa [we have umpteen references in 4000 prabhandham to on this] sivan - is not rudhran but same ari or hari [for, we have this 'siva' naamam in sri vishNu sahasra naamam also - I am just reproducing what sri krishnamacharya swamy has given in his SVSN site]. So naturally ari and siva is one and same. Now comes the great interpretation ofthis proverb. ariyaadhavan is not the ignorant as commonly meant. that word has to be split as below. ari - again same hari as stated before. yaadhavan - the one who is born in the yadhu clan, my krishNa, the great vaayilE - in the mouth maNNu - earth. He, the hari who came in the yaadhava clan, as krishNa, and ate mud to show his mother - hey, dear, I am the lord - who has come as your child - see here all the world and the galaxy in my mouth. Now just to get back to the meaning of Hari - My complexion also is blue; hence I am named Hari". harih also means one who removes the obstacles - harir harati pApAni. Next naama is siva: - meaning - One who confers auspiciouness subha aavahascha siva: - One who bestows auspiciouness on all. In mahaabhaaratha dhrONa parva (202), we have the following for supporting the above interpretation: "samEghayathi yan-nithyam sarvaarthaan sarva karmasu | sivamichchhan manushyaaNaam thasmaadhEsha siva: smrtha: || One who bestows all that is desired always by all His devotees is called siva because of this guNa of His". Two instances of sri vishNu being referred to as siva are in naaraayaNa upanishadh - "saasvatham sivam achyutham" - The Eternal, The Auspicious, and the One Who never lets His devotees fall" "sa brahma sa siva: sEndhra: so'kshara: parama: svaraat" - He is Brahma, He is Siva, He is Indra, He is Eternal, He is Supreme, He is the Lord of all. Dear bhakthaas, enjoy the same proverb in new light. Dhasan Vasudevan m.g.
