Guest guest
ANDAL'S ENVY CONCH'S PRIDE In the previous posting it was seen that the conch had forgotten the birth place and well settled with the Lord. Here,AndAL uses the word nal-sangE. "thEya asurar nadalaip pada muzhangum thORRathAi naR changE" nAchiAr thiru mozhi 7-2 Here the commenatry very pertinent." iru karaiAyaga iruppArgaL unakkoppArgaLO;kuRRathaiyum guNathaiyum kaNakkituch seiyum avargaL unakkoppAga mAttArgaLiRE;karmAnuguNamAga shrishtikkumavaniREA avan" The Lord has to create the souls as per their kArmic effects. The conch has only one role to play. He has to terrify the opponents and favour the devotees. Hence, those who are between the extremes-iru karaiyAi iruppArgaL- between kuRRam and guNam- cannot be equated to you, is the words addressed towards the pAnchajanyam. The fourth pAsuram clarly spells " Look the conch has ascended to the Lord's divine ears and eternally-ceaselessly appears to be exchanging some secret-mandhiram-with Him. Since, the conch is always with the Lord, AndAL mentions that the wealth of pAnchajanyam is nowhere near to the wealth of indhiran. Further, here the words ' Eri avan seviyil, andharam onRinRi.." is also given an excellent commentary. When somebody is facing problems the chakram has to leave Him. Unlike this the sangam always is with the Lord and hence the term "andharam onRinRi" The text runs as follows: orutharku orAbathu vandhavARE kaivittup pOvAraip pOlandRikkEA. This apart, this fact itself gives you an elevated pedestal among the conemporaries. There are so many, who exist in this extant world. However, you- pAnchanjanyam- is reigning high. You are eternally tasting the taste of His divine mouth who has vanquished the demon madhu. "vunnOdu vudanE oru kadalil vAzhvAraip pOle , innAr iNaiyAr enRu eNNuvAr illai kAn, mannAgi ninRu madhusUdhan vAyamudham, paN nALUm vuNginRAi, pAnchajanyamE" 7-2-5 oru dhEsathilE vunnOdu sEra varthikkiRavargaLai, avargaL parAkramAdhal, swarUpamAdhal ittu eNNak kadavaAr illai kAN. Those who live along with you are never thought of despite their good nature or their specaility. The emphasis is here on the everlasting togetherness of the pAnchajanyam and the nexus with the Lord's divine ears and mouth, which reserves the special place for the pAnchajanyam. this pAsuram itself, shall we say, places the conch a class apart vis-a-vis others. It is generally observed that people traverse and travel long distance to reach spiritual waters/rivers like ganges, godavari and take bath. AndAL mentions in the next pAsuram as follows: "oh!panchajanyam! instead of going distance for dipping into religious waters, you have ascended the Lord's countenance and taking bath, day in and day out in His mouth-waters-nectar.What a fortune? ennEA bhAkyam? is the exclamation. Thus goes on the adoration and admiration for the pAnchajanyam. is that all? (to be continued) vanamamalai padmanabhan
