Guest guest
CALF LOVE No, this is nothing about young love and I presume all are past that stage. Sri MG vAsudevan's write up on 'oil bath for calf' made me think of calf. This is no infatuation. Yes.The Lord's love for calf is real and deep. He feels extremely pleased when he takes care of the calves. This is true love for calf. How is that? Well. thiru mangai AzhwAr has mentioned in thiru nedun thAndagam "kanRu mEithu inidhugandha kALA ennum" 16 Is He happy with just being a saviour of nithya sUrigaL? No. Is He then happy with being a saviour of sanakAdhigaL ?NO Is He then satisfied being a saviour of innocent gOpikAs? NO. When He then satisfied? He is happy only after taking care of the calves. swAmi periyavAchAn's piLLai's commentary is as follows: ".. kanRu mEitha pinbukANum sarva bhauman AyiRRu.sarva rakshavathvam pushkalam AyiRRu kanRu mEitha pinbu iREA" The saving Grace of the Lord is only after He takes care of the calves. Why is it that? It is well known that the Lord is happy on taking care of the cows. Refer thiru voi mozhi "..thivathilum pasu nirai mEppu vuvathi.."10-3-10 He is extremely happy only after taking care of the calves. That is why it is stated in this pAsuram "kanRu mEithu inidhu vugandha .." Why? In that case, at lease there is a realisation that He is the saviour. Here, the ignorance and innocence of the calves are so extreme that, even the fact that He is the saviour is not known. Hence, He indeed feels happy in taking care of these. In fact, thiru mangai AzhwAr in periya thiru mozhi demonstrates how the Lord has taken care of the calves. It is generally said that, one can take the horse to the pond but cannot make it drink water. The Lord on seeing the calves being afraid of the water in the pond, simulates how to drink water. He puts His band behind His back and drinks water and demonstrates to them the means of qenching their thirst and allaying their fears. " ....kanRu mEithu viLaiyAda vallAnai, varimE kAnil, thadam parugu karu mugilai..." 2-5-3 That is regarding simulating the nature of cows and calves. Is it not the great calf love or shall we say love for calf? vanamamalai padmanabhan
