Sri:

Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama:

What adiyEn had heard somewhere was that Swami Ramanujar,

as he climbed the seven hills, kept repeating the gOvinda

nAma and from that time forward everyone got into the

same habit.

Speaking of the vAtsalya guNa shining in the Seven Hills,

this is spoken by Sri Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan Swami

in his suprabhatam to Thiruvengadamudaiyan "vAtsalyAdi

guNa ujjvalAm". When he talks about all the guNas that

shine on the mountain (vAtsalya Adi), the quality that

he picks first is vAtsalyam.

Our acharyas describe that six qualities of the Lord are

brought forth by Swami Nammazhvar in his agalakillEn

pasuram, submitted at the lotus feet of Thiruvengadam

udaiyAn : vAtsalyam, svAmitvam, sausIlyam, saulabhyam,

gnyAnam and shakti. These are the six qualities that

arise when Thayar intercedes on behalf of a chetana

(Mumukshuppadi : "purushakAra balaththAlE SvAthanthryam

thalai sAynthAl thalai edukkum guNangaLais sollugiRathu

nArAyaNa padham. avaiyAvana - vAthSalyamum Svamithvamum

SausIlyamum Saulabyamum nyAnamum sakthiyum."). When

surrendering to Thiruvengadamudaiyan, Nammazhvar refers

to these six qualities.

vAtsalyam - nigaril pugazhAy

svAmitvam - ulagam mUnRudaiyAy

sausIlyam - ennai ALvAnE

saulabhyam - thiruvEngadaththAnE

gnyAnam - munikkaNangaL virumbum

shakti - amarar virumbum

So, why is nigaril pugazhAy refer to vAtsalyam? Because

it is this quality that is the highest of all. We can

find many who do not tolerate others mistakes; we can

even find those who forgive others mistakes; but we

cannot find anyone other than Him who enjoy others

mistakes (like the cow [dhEnu] enjoying the dirt on

its calf [vatsam]).

And Nammazhvar says that this quality shines in

Thiruvengadam and gives Him the matchless fame.
