Dear Sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 

We saw the krithi of ooththukkaadu venkata kavi mahan stating "vidhuran thantha

kanji" to my krishNa and krishNa had mayakkam on that count. I also mentioned

this krithi can be attributed to aaNdaaL. Now the full krithi and its meanings

and some more points before we conclude this topic.

 

pallavi:

innum varak kaaNene - mannan raaja gOpaalan

EnO aRiyEnadi peNNE - enna seigiRaanOdi - innum

 

Meaning: Oh my friend, raaja gOpaalan, that king, I am unable to see him of he

having come here. I do not know why? What is that he is doing till now?

 

anupallavi:

munnam than thoNdarkkaai munthik kaninthadhellaam

sonna chol thannOdu thuNaiyaanathOdi - innum

 

meaning: earlier he used to be at the place with sympathy to help his servants -

his close ups- thoNdar. Perhaps all these are gone with his words now.

 

charaNam:

vidhuran thantha kanjiyum vELviyar tharum sORum

veNNaiyum maNNum uNdathaalE mantham

adhuvum sairandhari kaiyaal chandhaNag gandhangaLum

angam mEl poosina aanandham - innum

 

podhuvil sollap pOnaal bOdhaiyum thalaikku Eri

puNNiyath thoNdar paadum pORRiyum kaadhil Eri

nadhi maiyath thadam thEdi naanum kanaak kooRi

nanRaagath thoonginaanO ennadi sedhi - innum

 

meaning: hey what is the news? Is it that he has not turned up due to

* that gruel given by vidhuran,

* the lunch offered by the persons who do sacrifices,

* the butter eaten

* mud eaten

* all these have lead to indigestion, perhaps.

Added to that is the pleasure out of sandal paste and perfumes on his body

applied by that girl sairandhari. In general if you say, may be the intoxication

gone into the head, may be as stated above and as well due to the praise

showered by servants who have done lot of good penance.May be he searched

towards the island in the river [center place of the riverbed] and slept there.

Further I also added to his sleep by describing my dream. that is why he did not

come yet.

 

Dear bhakthaas, If you read the krithi once more, you will agree that this

krithi can easily be said as aaNdaaL's words, as though talking to a friend,

inquiring about ranganaathan - that krishNa - not turning up as promised. "How

this is deduced?"

 

The first clue is "nadhi maiyath thadam thEdi nanRaagath thoonginaanO",

 

nadhi maiyath thadam thEdi - in krishNa's several baala leelaas the place or

location is "yamuna river bank" as in

1. raasa leela - in saradhruthu - moonlit day - on river bank

2. kaaLiya narthanam - on the madu in river bank - a bathing ghat in river bank

3. vasthra abhaharaNam - in the bathing ghat of river

4. akroora's bathing in river - krishNa on the banks sitting in chariot, but

shows his naaraayaNa swaroopam in the river water to akroora

 

Only when father vasudheva carried krishNa on his head, river yamuna gave way in

the middle of her course, and she raised herself to touch the feet of the lord -

yamuna - to wash that glorious feet to cleanse herself. that is the only place

where center of river is referred. All other episodes are in the yamunaa theeram

- the banks. That is why many bhakthaas sing in praise my krishNa as yamuna

theera vihaari. So this nadhi maiyath thadam thedi thoonginavar or thuyinRavar -

one who slept in the island place in the river middle is no else except "sree

ranganaathan" - the husband of aaNdaaL.

 

Further she says "naanum kanaak kooRi" - who else sang verses saying he came,

had marriage with me - than aaNdaaL - those glorious 10 verses of "vaaraNam

aayiram". May be many bhakthaas got dream and expressed that as command of lord

to do this to do that etc - but only person to get a dream in which she gets

married with him is aaNdaaL. That too when the dream is expressed, perhaps even

in that pleasure of getting this girl, first he had a sleep, then reached her.

She could not wait till he reached - after that great dream - so started to ask

the friend - why he has not come yet?

 

Dear bhakthaas, immediately you may ask, is OVK familiar with aaNdaaL or where

is evidence that OVK knows about her dream as stated in naachchiyaar thirumozhi

NT etc - for there is a line in another krithi in raaga khamaas starting with

"pOdi pOdi ahankaari nee"

 

soodik koduththa sudark kOdhai avaL

sonna vazhi irukku ippodhai aval

paadik koduththa thirupaavai

paravasam aagida vazhi onRu irukkudhu paaradi - "pOdi pOdi ahankaari nee"

 

[i wrote a small article on this krithi in bhakti-list - may be - two years ago.

so OVK knows well NT as well Thiruppaavai]

 

Further points on the main krithi - aaNdaL has accused him in many places of not

keeping his words, the time etc -

1. first a straight hit - Elaaip poigaL uraippaanai - 14- 3 naachchiyaar

thirumozhi NT - here in the krithi - munnam than thoNdarkkaai munthik

kaninthadhellaam sonna chol thannOdu thuNaiyaanathOdi - he will tell but not

keep up his words - so the sonna chol is poi - easily uttering lies - Elaaip

poigaL as in NT.

2. maalaaip piRantha nambiyai maalE seyyum maNaaLanai - 14 -3 NT - maal -

mayakkam - bOdhai - intoxication - here in krithi - podhuvil sollap pOnaal

bOdhaiyum thalaikku Eri - he himself get intoxicated easily - not only that he

intoxicates others easily - maalaaip piRanthavan - mayakkaththil piRandhavan -

piRar mayangi kidantha pOdhu piRanthavan - maal kaNNanaaip piRanthavan -

leelayaa gOpa vEsha says swamy dhEsikan, leela sukhar - perhas he consumed his

own dose of that maal, being given to others.

3. "puNNiyath thoNdar paadum pORRiyum kaadhil Eri" - for any one, praising goes

simply to the head and makes him dance to the tune of the person who does this

praising - further whoever is praising is all his own puNNiyath thoNdar - who

have done lot of penance towards him - so naturally he will first obey to their

words - already in earlier line stated "thoNdarkkaai munthik kaninthadhellaam" -

even before these bhaagavathaas say some thing, he is ready to do that -carry

out that command - grant that boon asked for - for he is sthavapriya: - who

likes praising. So he stayed behind ignoring my waiting says aaNdaaL.

4. Due to this bOdhai and pugazh - intoxication and praising going into head -

makes the heart black at least for that period - preoccupied with - not

sympathetic to me - puRampOl uLLum kariyaanai NT - 14 -7 - one who has black

colour in the heart also, like outer skin colour - oh, what a sharp criticism?

5. Why all this suffering - the girl waiting - he does not turn up - she goes to

the extent of madal Erudhal etc - as done by thirumangai aazhvaar. For krishNa

is "peNNin varuththam aRiyaadha perumaan" 13-1 NT - that is why this girl,

aaNdaal, says "EnO aRiyEnadi peNNE - enna seigiRaanOdi - innum" - for, he will

ask one girl to come to a secret place, there he will come with another girl and

infront of these two girls enjoy with yet another girl - re - karumalark

koonthal oruththi - perumaal thirumozhi 6-3- nee oruvarkkum meyyan allai says

aazhvaar there.

6. Why all these - because he is "nandhagOpan magan ennum kodiya kadiya

thirumaalaal" - NT 13 -6- again - he is harsh and hard headed for he is king

nandhagOpaa's son - koorvEl kodunthozhilan nandhagOpan - thirup 1.

 

Dear all, in spite of all these, he is "my kingmannan raaja gOpaalan" -

gOpaala raaja - ranga raajaa - why he has not turned up - hey friend what is

that he is doing? where?

 

Perhaps is it that my praising or singing has not reached him - then I have to

intensify the praising of my krishNa or singing his glories - so, taking leave

of you all, please.

PS: just to list out how many leelaas are covered in this krithi - that makes

this krithi an outstanding one.

1. vidhuraa's food

2. food from wives of brahmins who did sacrifice

3. butter eating - kaNNapiraan peRRa veNNaik kalvi

4. mud eating - showing world in his mouth to yasOdhaa

5. showing earth in his stomach to maarkaNdeya - maN is earth - also the bhoomi

6. kubja's kaamam

7. thoNdarkkai kanindhathu - akroora, kaaLiyan, gOpees, cows etc
