Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

We saw in the previous post some body addressing sri raamaa as "viri kadal

vEndhaa". We have to get the answer who is that "ignorant - ?" to address raamaa

so, when raamaa is not even having his own inherited country to rule.

The answer to the question is samudhra raajan - king of oceans - saagara: as

stated in srimadh raamaayaNam. Is it not something unusual. The ocean king

himself addressing somebody else as "king of vastly spread oceans".

Perhaps he has become a realised soul, knows fully well, who is this sri raamaa

standing on the shores with bow in his hand ready to shoot arrows [already he

shot some as per raamaayaNam]. Why this conclusion? For he must have heard that

proclamation, just three days back, made by that very same raamaa-

sakrudhEva prapannaaya thavaasmeethi cha yaachathE |

abhayam sarva bhoothEbhyO dhadhaamyEthadh vratham mama ||

slOkam 33 sarga or chapter 18 yudhDha kaaNdam sreemadh raamaayaNam

for who else, except that supreme lord - sreeman naaraayaNan - can make such a

proclamation, "I will give asylum to anyone who seeks that from me".

So he correctly addresses "viri kadal vEndhaa" - means real business- an apt

name calling - "oh supreme lord sriman naaraayaNa - I know, now, you, who is

lying in the milk ocean, on that 100 headed snake, also now standing by your

side in the guise of your brother. So I surrender to you".

Now a doubt comes why aruNachala kaviraayar AK has to say surrender unto your

feet?

For sreemadh raamaayaNam says

saagara: samupakramya poorvam aamanthraya veeryavaan | - 24th slOkam

abraveeth praanjalir vaakyam raaghavam saraNapaaNinam |

-25th slOkam of 22nd sargam yudhDha kaaNdam

this "saagara: praanjali: saraNa paaNinam vaakyam abraveeth" has been taken

literally by AK and he composed this krithi. See the viruththam before this

krithi. The viruththam (#14) just before the song states:

"perumaan pirakkini vaaLi pidikka, varuNan thudiththu vandhu paru maamaNee

aayira maalai paadha kaaNikkaiyaaga vaiththu nirupaa charaNam pizhai poruppaai

neeyE charaNam enadhu aavi tharuvaai charaNam ena munnE thaazhndhaan adikkeezh

veezhndhaanE".

Rough translation: the lord sri raamaa took the brahmaasthram in his hand.

Varuna trembling came up, offering 1000 big gem studded ornament to raamaa,

fallen on raamaa's feet saying "oh king surrender unto you, please give me my

soul".

The title above the song and viruttam is "shrI rAmarai varuNan saraN adaidhal".

Sri kaviraayar considers there is no difference between varuNan [the

athidhEvathai for water] and the samudhra raajan but actually there is.

Otherwise raamaayaNam also would have stated varuNan.

[At this stage I have to express my sincere thanks to Sri Lakshman ragde of

Canada for the details he provided on this topic - the viruththam above etc when

I sent a personal mail and got his spontaneous response. Without that info, this

write up would not have appeared before you all].

Sri raama got angry and raised his bow getting ready to shoot the brahmaasthram

- [biramanin akkini vaaLi - stated here as pirakkini vaaLi - piraman is brahma

[no B or P in tamil, all pi only], akkini is agni - fire - vaaLi is arrow - this

brahmaasthram generally spits fire and goes to destroy the aimed object]. When

the king of ocean did not turn up towards the end of raamaa's japam for three

days [japam to please the ocean king], raamaa got angry and started saying

lakshmana bring my kOthandam, I will make the ocean dry by my asthraas.

sa thri raathrOshithasthathra nayagnO dharmavathsala: |

samudhrasya thatha: krudhDhO raamO rakthaantha lOchana: |

sameepastham uvaacha idham lakshmaNam subha lakshaNam || slOkam 13 -21st sargam.

See the description "rakthaantha lOchana:" - already he is being described as

"kaarmEnich chengaN kadhir madhiyam pOl mugaththaan - manaththukku iniyaan - now

that red eyes have become blood red - rakthaantha lOchana:. Is it a prelude to

show his anger to raavaNa - "sinaththinaal then ilangai kOmaanaich cheRRa" -

that anger shown and threatening the ocean king a prelude to showing of final

anger on raavaNa.

adhya madhbaaNanirbhinnair makarair makaraalayam |

nirudhDhathOyam soumithrE plavadhbhi pasya sarvatha: || slokam 20 sargam 21.

I will make the ocean dry with my bow and arrows without water so that the fish

will be on floor dead without water. Actually he shot few arrows also. When

about to shoot brahmaasthram saagara: or varuNa [as pr AK] the lord of ocean

rushed and started pleading to forgive.

But why does he offer such a lame excuse - as

maddi meen onROdu onRu mallaadi amar pooNum

vazhakku theerkkap pOnEn idhaRkO un manam kONum

in the fear some reason he has to find out. So fished out from waters such a

reason.

Further the beauty is that ettum irandum theriyaadha enakku - I don't know the

eight - the thiru ashtaakshara manthram, the two - the dhvayam. Previously a

realised soul - addresses viri kadal vEndhaa - but now says "ettum irandum

theriyaadha enakku".

Is it true. May be there is no aachaarya present between the lord and the

devotee surrendering. Further more the periya piraatti seethaa is not with the

lord. she is in asOka vanam. So nobody to plead and make this surrender

successful. That is why. But lakshmaNa is there. But as brother of that angry

raama.

Or is it out of fear for that brahmaasthram. Chances are there for the fear of

brahmaasthram. For there are 3 asthrams which can not be resisted by any body.

They are brahmaasthram, naaraayaNaasthram, paasupadhaastram - means - in the

names of the three important brahmaa, vishnu, sivan.

Just recollect what happened when hanuman was hit by indhrajit with

brahmaasthram. Since hanuman had blessings of brahma, that his asthram will not

harm him, hanuman just kept quite, was bound for some time, mainly to give

respect to the asthra manthram athidhEvadhai who is brahma himself.

When bagadhaththan sent naaraayaNaasthram in mahabhaaratha war, krishNa has to

stand and receive it. Arjuna chided krishna why you received it [for krishNa has

said I will not touch weapon in war but receives the asthra]. Then krishNa has

to say, "otherwise it would simply have killed you oh arjuna, nobody can resist

this asthram". Since krishNa is naaraayaNa himself, he just received it as a

garland in his chest. Similarly the third one.

So it is a lame excuse by varuNan. Is it a fish fight or a high level fight?

Let it be a good or lame excuse by king of oceans. We had a sumptuous treat out

of a good krithi.

Dhasan
