SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah:

Dearest Srivaishnavas,

AzhwAr blesses us with various roopams [forms] of

EmperumAn Sriman Narayanan.

My nAThA! [Master- Lord!]- One who has taken 3+ 36= 39

vibhava forms; out of which the three fives (15)

important ones! One who is at Milky Ocean (PaaRkadal),

Soorya maNdalam, and at Sri Vishnu lOkam! Who is of

twelve forms, Kesavan, Narayanan… Dhamodharan, who are

from the lustrous three vyUha avathAr (Sankarshana,

Pradhyumnan, Aniruddhan)! Who is eternal jyOthI at

Paramapadham! In spite of all these glorious forms,

You have also most compassionately and mercifully

entered into my heart and reside there as Haardan!

What a dayaa of Yours! [Why? That itself is the

wonder!]

Swamy Desikan mentions thirty plus avatarams in

tattvathrayaadhikaaram of Srimad Rahasyathrayasaram,

[perhaps based on this verse]. In the commentary

SaaraswAdhini, based on Paancharaathram and SrI

Saasvatham statements, the vibhava avathArams are

enlisted as thirty nine avathArams. (Sri SMS Chari

lists them in his book on Vaishnavism). There is also

a SrI Sookthi that says: Mathsya koorma varaaha

avathArams… are specially mentioned due to a specific

purpose for these avatharams. (ivaRRil mathsya

koormAdhya avathArangaL oru prayOjanavasatthAlE

visEshitthuch chollappattana..).

Aindhum aindhum aindhumaay- The first five are mathsya

koorma, varaaha, narasimha vaamana avathArams. Next

the human avathArams with parents: RamO Ramaccha

raamaccha Krishna: kalkI janArdhana: Parasurama, Rama,

Balarama, Krishna Kalki avatharam. For teaching

[upadEsans] and connected with Vedas: five

avathArams: Hamsa, Hayagriva, Nara Narayanan –

dhatthAthrEya avathArams.

kANadha Saakya pAshandai: tharI dharmO vilOpitha:-

thridhaNdadhAriNA pUrvam vishunaa raksithA thrayI-

thus dhatthAthrEya was glorified by Acharyas.

[From Sri Varadan’s post few years ago:

there was a rishi nammed aTri. He and his wife

anuSuyai performed penance requesting that brahmA,

siva and mahAvishNu be born to them as sons. As a

fruit of that successful penance, perumAL came as

their son dattAtrEya rishi, siva was born as durvAsA

and chandra was born as brahmA's amsam. When the sons

reached a certain age, aTri educated them and sent

them to perform penance. dattAtrEya went to

the himAlayAs, durvAsA went to kailAsam and chandran

went to satyavrata kshEtram. Since brahmA's day is

spent performing penance to perumAL, chandran, being

brahmA's amsam performed penance to perumAL in this

kshEtram. perumAL appeared to chandran in the form

of vAmanA and asked for his wish. chandran requested

perumAL to come to chandramaNdalam and be there so

that he can perform nitya kainkaryam to perumAL.

perumAL did the same and went to chandra maNdalam.]

moonRu mUrthy- Sriman Narayanan enters into Brahmaa

and Rudran [anupravEsham] and performed as indweller

and thus He is TrimUrthy.

MoonRumaay- Kesava, Narayanan – 12 which are divided

into four three ; with each four from each of the

three vyuha namely, SankarshaNan, Pradyumnan and

Aniruddhan. [swamy desikan had established thus with

three vyUha vivahaaram when he mentions about

Paancharaathra perhaps based on this AzhwAr’s

moonRumaay- Swamy desikan always states based on

AzhwAr, AchArya Sri Sookthis.

KuResa also mentions beautifully in Varadarajasthavam

The VyUhaa states are four in number:

VaasudEvan-SankarshaNan-Pradhyumnan-Aniruddhan .

In the above Four VyUha roopams, the first One

( VaasudEvan) is identical with Para VaasudEvan of

SrI Vaikuntam . Both have all the Six guNams

( Jn~Anam , Bhalam , Veeryam , Isvaryam , Sakthi

and Tejas ). Thus PaancharAthra Saasthrams inform us

that the other three VyUha Moorthys have unique pairs

of the above six guNams between Them . According to

this view , SankarshaNan has exclusive ownership of

Jn~Anam and Bhalam pair ; Pradhyumnan has Veeryam and

Isvaryam;Aniruddhan has Sakthi and Tejas. This is the

view of PaancharAthra Aagamam. The VaikAnasa Aagamam

identifies on the other hand the Four Moorthys of the

VyUham as : Purusha-Sathya-Achyutha-Aniruddha Roopams

..Aniruddhan is thus common to both the Aagamams.

If Para VaasudEvan is identical to the VaasudEva

Roopam of the four VyUhams of PaancharAthram ,

then the total number of VyUhams can be reduced

to just three ( Thri-vyUha Paksham ). Even with

all these splits of the six guNams between the three

VyUha Moorthys, they have inherently all the six

guNams at all states. It is only for the convenience

of UpAsakAs , the six GuNams are split as three diads

and are linked to each of the three VyUha Moorthys.

We have to remember again the ShAdguNya Poorthi

( embodiment of all the Six GuNams) is manifested in

all the five states of the Lord ( Para-VyUha-Vibhava-

ArchA and antharyAmi). That is why KurEsar chooses

the word " Sarvathra" to emphasize this fact.

Swamy Desikan has chosen this SlOkam of Sri VardarAja

Sthavam as the pramANam for his elaboration of the

VyUhA and other derivative VyUhA concepts (

vyUhAntharam). In Srimath Rahasya Thraya Saaram ,

Swamy Desikan has used this slOkam to reconcile the

fact that the VyUham can be either Three or Four.

Swamy Desikan has also referred to the meanings

of this slOkam in the context of his commentary on

VyUham in the Chillarai Rahasyams of Sri Tatthva

Maathurkai and Sri Tatthva Thraya chuLakam . Swamy

Desikan provided pramANam for the three fold VyUham

view ( Thri-VyUha-paksham View) in His Taathparya

Chandrikai, which is a commentary on

GithOpanishad of Lord KrishNaa.

Out of the Four VyUhams arise the twelve KesavAdhi

Roopams. Three VyUhantharams are linked to each of the

four VyUhams to yield the Twelve VyUhAnthara Roopams ,

which we wear as Urdhva PuNDrams at different parts of

the upper torso invoking

the presence of these 12 VyUhAnthara Moorthys:

1.Kesavan : Chathuscchakram namasyAmi Kesavam

Kanakaprabham

2.NaarAyaNam :NaarAyaNam ghana-shyAmam chathussankham

namAmyaham

3.Maadhavan (4) Govindhan (5) VishNu (6)Madhusoodhanan

7.Thrivikraman (8) Vaamana (9)Sridharan

(10)HrishIkEsan (11) PadhmanAbhan and (12)

DhAmOdharan.

Each of these 12 VyUha Moorthys are linked to each of

the Twelve AdhithyAs ; Each of these 12 VyUha Moorthys

are also associated with each of the twelve months

starting from Maarghazhi.

Thus the Four VyUhams and their derivative Twelve

VyUhAntharams are linked to the 12 PuNDrams, 12 Months

and 12 AdhithyAs (as NirvAhakars for them). All of

these glories are assoicated with Lord VaradarAjan is

the upadEsam by KurEsar in this slOkam]

SrI UttamUr Swamy says: it may also mean: Koil,

Thirumalai, PerumAL Koil (Srirangam RanganAthan,

Thirumalai Srinivasan and Kanchi Varadharaja PerumAL].

yEnRu- Thus having taken mercifully all the above

forms and Roopams for the sake of devotees:

[yERRukkoNdu]. When You can perform as indweller in

chEthana and achAEthana everything with your sheer

will[sankalpam],

You have taken all these roopmas (forms- dhivya

mangaLa vigraham] only for the sake of devotees and

NithyasUris; thus You are with form ever and always

with full entirety. [nathE rUpam nachAkArO nAyudhAni

nachAspadham. thathApi purushAkArO bhakthAnaam tvam

prakASayE..- jithanthE sthOthra- 1-5]. Thus You have

on Your own accord have taken so many forms…

yen AviyuL- Other external forms- my physical eyes

always can never see. Some are in Other world.

(Paramapadham); Some were there only during sometime

(Rama, Krishna avatarams). ArchAvathAram- also one has

to go and see and enjoy. But in order to be with me

always blessing me compassionately, You are there in

my heart as Haarda rUpan- what a dayA of Yours! Your

vaathsalyam, vyAmOham- is beyond my words of

expression. I can never ever put them in words- Your

mercy on me – affection on me is indescribable. What a

wonder! What a dayAparan You are! KrupAkaran. Parama

dhayALu!

In spite of all those great places, You have chosen to

reside in my heart too!.

Now Sri UttamUr Swamy elaborates the Poorvachaarya

commentary.

Swamy says: Since the Hitha was described with various

kinds of learning and development of jnAnam, there can

be a link of the individual alphabet of Sanskrit to

these.

moonRu muppatthu -33 letters. Ka, cha, ta, tha,

pa- each five (ka, kha, ga, gha, nga- thus 5) time

five= 25; ya, ra, la, va- four; Sa, ksha, sa,

ha....four ).

ARinOdu oru aindhum aindhum sixteen letters- akaram to

am… a, aa, yi, yee.. etc..]

Aindhum- LakAram-

mooNru mUrthy- rk, yajur, saamam- three Vedas.

moonRu moonRu moonRu moonRum- 12 lettered VasudEva

mantra. [AzhwAr – why did he leave ashtAksharam and

chose dwAdasAksharam? This also is as great [if not

greater than] as ashtAksharam. Every number may mean

a mantra- one may ask. Yes. But they may not be as

powerful as 2, 8, and 12.]

moonRu thOnRu jyOthi- the three lettered praNavam and

the jyOthiswarUpi- is the One enshrined in praNavam-

as Sarva sEshi; JagathkaaraNan.

With all such glories, and still, You have mercifully

entered into my heart.. what a sowlabhyam! [etthiRam !

etthiRam!]

AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam

namo Narayana
