Guest guest
Dear BhakthAs: Thirumangai Mannan's Thiruneermalai Paasurams are in between His ThiruvallikkENi and Thirukkadanmallai Paasurams .They are housed as Periya Thirumaozhi 2.4.1 to 2.4.10 Paasurams. First ThiruvallikkENi and next Thiru Neeramalai: Why ? ********************************************* There is a reason for Thiruneermalai MangaLAsAsanam to follow that of ThiruvallikkENi MangaLAsAsanam. As Thirumangai was enjoying GeethAchAryan at His AaasthAnam at ThiruvallikkENi ( " Mannu taNN pozhilum vaaviyum mathiLum maada maaLikayum MaNDapamum , Tennan ThoNDayarkkOn seytha nann Mayilait-thriuvallikkENi ninRAnai) , Thirumangai saw the Lord conversing with ThoNdaimAn Chakravarthy and blessing Him for the beautiful city of ThiruvallikkENi as His place of residence with cool groves ( Mannu taNN pozhilum Vaaviyum ) , multistoried palaces , festival maNDapams and mansions( Maada MaaLikai MaNDapamum). This city of the Lord was all constructed by " Tennan ThoNDayarkkOn seytha nann Mayilai ThiruvallikkENi ). The king of ThondaimaNDalam inquired about the KshEthra Yaathrais of his fellow Kshathriyan , Thirumangai Mannan : " Oh blessed AzhwAr ! Have You also visited the dhivya dEsam of Thiruneermalai , where the Lord has blessed me with His Prathyaksham like our dear ParthasArathy before whom we are blessed to stand and worship ? ". AzhwAr said that he had not and will go after completing his MangaLAsAsanam of the EmperumAn of " tEnamar sOlai Maada Maamayilai ThiruvallikkENi ).True to his word , AzhwAr arrived next at Thiuneermalai for the MangaLAsAsanam of Thiru NeervaNNan. Thus the two dhivya dEsams where the Lord is Prathyaksham to ThoNDaimAn Chakravarthy recieved contigous MangaLAsAsanams from Thirumangai . Next the AzhwAr proceeded to another dhivya dEsam abundant in neer(water/ocean water this time) , Thirukkadanmallai. General Introduction to Thiruneermalai Paasurams of Kaliyan ************************************************ There are 19 paasurams by Kaliyan on Thiruneer malai EmperumAn . Ten of them are found in the Periya Thirumaozhi decad : 2.4 . Here, AzhwAr celebrates the Lord, who manifested in many Vibhava avathArams and archAvathArams. He refers to the ArchAvathArams of the Lord at ThirunarayUr , ThirukkOvalUr Kudanthai and VibhavAthArams of Raama , KrishNa and Narasimha as "NinRAn , NadanthAn and AmarnthAn ". He celebrates in the Paasurams the Bhaktha Vathsala , dushta nigraham aspects of the Lord of Thirneermalai. The dushta nigraham is aimed to two kinds of people: (1) Those who think that they themselves are Isvarans like HiraNyan and his brother who stole BhUmi DEvi (2) Those PaashaNDis who are engaged in NirIswara Vaadham ( That there is no Iswaran) . When Kaliyan performs MangaLAsAsanam of the Lord of Thiruneermalai , He is overwhelmed by the Bhaktha sulabhthvam , Aasritha RakshaNam of the Lord demonstrated in Raama-KrishNa-Nrusimha- VarAhAvathArams . That propells him to identify the Lord's residence at the end of each paasuram of this decad as : " (irukkum ) idam , maamalayAvathu NeermalayE ". This is the place (dhivya dEsam) with majestic hillock dear to the heart of the Lord of Thiruneermalai . Kaliyan states that this is the place dear to the SarvEswaran , who blessed us with the standing , sitting and reclining postures as at His very many dhivya dEsams. Here at this Dhivya dEsam , He presents Himself at one place as the Moorthy in ninRa ThirukkOlam as NeervaNNan/Neelamukhil VaNNan , in sitting posture as Saantha Narasimhan and reclining posture as RanganAthan ( KidanthAn in MaaNikka Sayanam posture). In the first paasuram , Kaliyan points out that this dhivya dEsam of Thiruneermalai is equivalent to number of other dhivya dEsams like Thiruvaali , NaacchiyAr Koil ( ThirunaRayUr ) , Thirukkudanthai , ThirukkOvalUr et al that are dear to SrIman NaarAyaNan . In the second Paasuram , AzhwAr refers to the help to Agni to burn down KaaNDava Vanam and to get rid of all asurAs there and other inauspicious entities as well as the reduction of the BhAram for BhUmi Piratti by destruction of the other asurAs like HirNyan during NrusimhAvathAram . In the third paasuram Kaliyan refers to the destruction of many kings like Jayadhrathan as PaarthasArathy during the occasion of the war at KurukshEthram , when He lightened the load of BhUmi dEvi thru removal of such dushtans . Lord helped Arjunan eliminate Jayadhrathan by using His chakrAyudham to make it look like the Sun had set and darkness hinting nightfall had arrived . In the fourth paasuram , the anukoolams for Pancha PaaNDavAs thru the destruction of DuryOdhana and his brothers as well as their retinue in the Mahaa Bhaaratha Yuddham ; AzhwAr also refers to NrusimhAvathAram again and the fierceness with which the Lord destroyed the enemy to Bhaktha PrahlAdhan . In the fifth Paasuram , AzhwAr sees NeervaNNa PerumAL as Raamachandran and celebrates the deeds of Raghuveeran, who had the sEthu built across the ocean and arrived at Lankaa nagaram to destroy the evil RaavaNan with BrahmAsthram . In the sixth Paasuram , Kaliyan addresses the Lord as " Neer Aar pErAn ", the one with the nAmam of Neer VaNnan , who swallowed the whole world and retained it in a small portion of His stomach during the time of deluge and floated on the waters of MahA PraLayam . His Sarva Rakshakthvam and ApAra KaaruNyam is saluted here. Further , AzhwAr celebrates the Veeryam of the Lord displayed during ParasurAmAvathAram , when He destroyed KarthaveeryArjunan and His descendants as well as the Kshathriya Kulam for 21 generations. In the seventh paasuram , Kaliyan recalls the veeryam and sakthi of the Lord, who destroyed Karoosha Raajan , Poundra VaasudEvan , who had arrogated himself to the status of the Lord Himself . During that occasion , Lord as KrishNa VaasudEvan destroyed the king of Kaasi , who sided with the pretender , PouNDra VaasudEvan . The tejas and Veeryam displayed by JwAlA Nrusimhan is also celebrated once more in this Paasuram to acknowledge the Lord's blessings for this kshEthram to become a Nrusimha KshEthram through His presence as ShAntha Narasimhan here. In the eighth pasuram , Kaliyan celebrates the anugraham of the Lord of Thiruneermalai to VaidhikAs and His display of anger at Dhigambhara PaashaNDis , who discard eternal Vedic instructions . In the ninth Paasuram , Kaliyan celebrates the natural beauty of Thiruneermalai with its verdant groves and flower gardens and performs upadEsam for us to reach Thiruneermalai before the inauspicious words of PaashaNdis and NaasthikAs fall on our ears and recieve the anugraham of NeervaNNan . AzhwAr identifies this dhivya dEsam as Ujjevana Thiruppathi , for Bhaktha janams , while the Lord makes Himself difficult of approach by Kshudhra Janams . In the tenth Paasuram , Kaliyan identifies himself as the reputed warrior and remover of Kali dhOsham as one , who has deep attachment to the Lord of Thiruneermalai .He asks us to recite his paasurams on the Lord of Thiruneermalai to gain abundant Kaimkarya Lakshmi , aparimitha Iswaryam including rulership over kingdoms . adiyEn will cover the other paasurams of the AzhwArs in the next posting .
