Dearest Srivaishnavas,

 

AzhwAr enjoys nAga sayanam in next PAsuram:

 

vidaththavaayo raayiram

iraayiramkaN venthazhal,

vidaththuvIzhvi laathapOkam

mikkasOthi thokkaseer,

thoduththumElvi thaanamaaya

peLavan^eera raavaNai

paduththapaayal paLLikoLva

then_kolvElai vaNNANE! (18)

 

oh Ocean coloured dark complexioned Lord! Above your

reclining position, from the thousand mouths and two

thousand eyes, flakes of fire emanating from them;

ensuring the Body not to fall; shedding enormous

luster from its gem stones on the hoods; Such great

Divine ThirumEbi of the AdhiSEshan- soft, tender as

well as form to support Your divine Dhivya mangaLa

vigraham to recline and have Yoga nithrA on the milky

ocean [paaRkadal] . Why are You having Your Yoga

nithrA? (paLLikoLvadhu en kol?)

 

Due to the request and prayer of Devas- in oder to

alleviate their soorows and remove their dangers, You

gracefully appear in the middle of Milky coean on

AdhisEshan and the way that AdhiSeshan with its 1000

heads and 2000 eyes with flakes of fire from them;

when You feel for the jeevas’ sorrows and samsaaric

afflictions of Your devotees, You feel miserable and

bad for Them and in order to cool down, You choose to

recline on Milky Ocean on the bed of Adhi sEshan. How

can You bear with those fiery exhaling and fumes from

those and eyes and mouths! Is the milky ocean a rest

for the fiery exhale or is the fumes or flakes of fire

heatingup the chill ocean to comfort Your ThirumEni?

[i do not know] You are Sarva Shakthan; You give

abhaya pradhAnam to everyone! Where is the danger for

You? Why is AdhisEshan keeping such a close watch on

You and protect You with such fiery eyes! What is his

concern for You (pongum parivu)! is he keeping You

safe from the asuRAs and enemies!

And why should he be worried! Why are You posing (*or

pretending) to be sleeping( uRanguvaan pOlE

vizhitthirundhu)?

 

White ocean on which whitish Body of AdhisEshan [and

fiery eyes and mouths-] on which the datk blue hued

divine Body of Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan. What a

colour combination and Beauty!

 

Veezhivilaadha bhOgam- ceaseless bhagavadh anubhavam

is the right meaning. However due to the great

description of AdhisEshan’s body, Sri UttamUr Swamy

gives a different commentary to match the same as

above.

 

Mikka jyOthi- the gems shining luster from the heads

and hence great lustrous heads of AdhisEshan.

(iruLiriya chuddar maNigaL imaikkum neRRi- by

KulasekarAzhwAr). The gems appear to have been stuck

together like garland of gems on the 1000 heads- and

hence “thokkaseer” [well laid beautiful row of gem

stones]

 

vidhAnamAya- also as umbrella (senRaal kudaiyaam;

irundhaal singAsanamAm etc..]

 

vElai vaNNanE!- Ocean – You are possessed with such

Gambeeryam like the deep blue dark ocean! You are

karuNaik kadal- (ocean of compassion); Not only You

have the same colour like the ocean; also the swabAvam

as the ocean. How can we comprehend Your mind and

glories!
