Guest guest
AchArya Hrdhayam sUthram 227-9 The ninth Ten "neRi ellAm eduthuraitha" The term 'neRi ellAm eduthuraitha' has been used by AzhwAr in the fouth ten to describe the divine action of Lord krishNA in blessing us with srimadh bhagwadh gEtha comprising of various ways of attaining Him. In the context of this sUthram vis-a-vis ninth ten, the same term is used by sri azhagia maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr and succinctly explained by swAmi maNavALa mAmunikaL,that akin to sri bhagwadh gEthA, AzhwAr also prescribes the various ways of reaching Him, in this onbadhAm pathu. "adhil dhurpala budhigaLukku, mAlai nanni, kAlai mAlai viNdu, thEanai vAdA malar ittu, anbarAm sAnga bakthi, adhil asaktharku thAL adaiyum prabhakthi, adhil asaktharku vuchAraNa mAthram, sarvOpAya sUnyarku ippathum pAdi idum thoNdan, enRu, gEthAchAryanaip pOlEa, adhikAra anuguNam neRi ellAm vuraikkinRAr onbadhAm pathilEA" It was seen that just thinking of the Lord is enough and we need not worry ourselves about anything else."sindhippEA amaiyum-siRRa vENdA manamEA" .9-1-7; Will all have this conviction and confidence? Are everybody is blessed with this attitude? For the people who are not so blessed, what shall be done? They can take the path of bhakthi-devotion, is AzhwAr's prescription. Thus sithhOpAyam may not be liked by one and all. For them path of devotion is an option. Worship Him with devotion and flowers.Do this morning and evenings. People may not even like or may be incapable of doing this - adhil asaktharkku- For them the deed is small but the yiled is great. What is the deed spelt out? Let them tell about thirukkaNNa puram. Their kArmic effects will wither off and they will attain a good place. For those who think even this is big? --adhil asaktharkku. Well even for those AzhwAr has prescribed a way. Let them tell this thiruvoi mozhi with devotion, they will attain the Lord' s abode. Thus , like in sri bhagwadh gEthA, AzhwAr prescribes different methods of following. These are given in accordance with the interests and tastes of various categories of souls. "neRi ellAm eduthuraitha" thiru voi mozhi 4-8-6- All the ways have been explained in sri bhagwadh gEthA by Lord krishNA. Similarly, AzhwAr also has counselled in this ninth ten -onbadhAm pathilEa. What has been attributed by AzhwAr about srimad bhagwadh gEthA is aptly suitable for AzhwAr himself in this ninth ten of thiru voi mozhi as AzhwAr also prescribed ways and means for variety of people. pAsuram-s What is prescribed for those who who are not blessed with conviction on just thinking of the Lord.? Follow the path of devotion 'mAlai nanni thozhudhu ezhuminO vinai keda, kAlai mAlai kamala malar ittu nEr" 9-10-1---> Approach the Lord and worship Him with flowers in the morning and evenings. "thEani vAdA malar ittu nEr irainjumin" 9-10-4-> Worship Him with fresh flowers. For those who think this is much for them, let them surrender Him as prabhakthi. " charaNam Agum thana thAL adianthARkku ellAm" 9-10-5;surrender unto His feet. For those even if this is much " thirukkaNNa puram solla, nALum thuyar pAdu sArAvEA"9-10-10; Spell out thirukkaNNapuram . All your problems will vanish. For those even if this is much "thirukkaNNapuram pAdi Ada paNimin avan thALgaLEa" 9-10-11;--> Just spell out this thriuvoizhozhi and achieve the desired end. The sithOpAyam -just thinking of HIm/sindhippEa amiayum The sAthyOpAyam-bhakthi --malar ittu; The surrender -prabhakthi-charaNam Agum; the vuchAraNam-spelling out His name/place-thirukkaNnapuram solla the thiru voi mozhi - thirukkaNNapuram pAdi Ada - are the several prescriptions of AzhwAr in consonance with the desire, capabablity and tastes of the people. Hence, this is drawn as similar to that of gEthA sAsthram where this has been done by Lord krishNA and described by AzhwAr himself as 'neRi ellAm eduthu vuraitha' which is the essence of onbadhAm pathu. Guest guest
Dear SrI PadmanAbhan: Thanks for your references to PRAPATTHI , SiddhOpAyam and SaadhyOpAyam in your most recent posting . These are very important concepts , which form the anchor of VisishtAdhvaitham .Hence I will add few more thoughts on them for clarification for those , who may not be that familiar.Additional definitions and clarifications on these three doctrines would be helpful to those , who may not be too familiar with these mysterios sounding Sanskrit words . 1)Prapatthi: The word is to be spelled Prapatthi and not Prabhakthi . Prapatthi is sanctioned by VedAs . It can be practised by anyone ( SarvAdhikAram). The other names for it are NyAsam , Aaathma NikshEpam , Aathma SamarpaNam , SaraNAgathi et al. AchArya RaamAnujA's SaraNAgathi gadhyam is central in showing how to perform this SaraNAgathy to SrIman NaarAyaNan . The mugdhaka Vaakyam of AchArya RaamAnujA also has important bearing on the doctrine of SaraNAgathi: " Sakruth prArTanAmAthrENa apEkshitham dhAsyatheethi visvAsa-poorvakam prArTanamithi yaavath " (Meaning): Prapatthi is synnonymous with VisvAsam ( Implicit and total faith in SrIman NaarAyaNan as unfailing Rakshakan ( protector and grantor of Moksham). He has to be approached only once with prayer for the realization of Moksham . He is the One , who can grant all one desires with that kind of prayer. The angams of Prapatthi and the ways to perform Prapatthi has been explained by AzhwArs and PoorvAchAryAs. 2) SiddhOpAyam: SrIman NaarAyaNa is recognized as SiddhOpAyam . " Siddha means One who has been in existence even prior to the observance of the SaadhanA like Bhakthi or Prapatthi yOgam and since the ever-existing God is Himself the prinicpal cause (upAyam) for attaining Him , He is the SiddhOpAyam ". 3) SaadhyOpAyam : The UpAyam to be practised by us such as Bhakthi or Prapatthi yOgam .They help the Lord to change His nigraha sakthi towards ChEthanams and transform it in to anugraha sakthi as a result of our sincere prayer to Him with VisvAsam to protect us .Saadhya refers to what needs to be done through human effort . Our sampradhAyams differ with respect to the need for human effort . That is a different story . V.Sadagopan *************************************************************************** The sithOpAyam -just thinking of HIm/sindhippEa amiayum The sAthyOpAyam-bhakthi --malar ittu; The surrender -prabhakthi-charaNam Agum; the vuchAraNam-spelling out His name/place-thirukkaNnapuram solla the thiru voi mozhi - thirukkaNNapuram pAdi Ada - are the several prescriptions of AzhwAr in consonance with the desire, capabablity and tastes of the people. Hence, this is drawn as similar to that of gEthA sAsthram where this has been done by Lord krishNA and described by AzhwAr himself as 'neRi ellAm eduthu vuraitha' which is the essence of onbadhAm pathu.
