Dearest Srivaishnavas,

AzhwAr enjoyed the Lion and the Brahmachari form; Now

He immerses himself in the Lord's avathAram as human.

Oh Ashcharya purushaa! The most wonderful Lord! The

One who holds divine wonderful weapons! You created

the Universe and during Varaaha avathAran brough back

the bhUmi from troubled waters; You measured the

Universe; You retained the same in your stomach

[during dissolution- mahA praLayam]; You spit them

back [after the praLayam] for reenactment of your

leelA vibhUthi; Youc erated the oceans; and You built

the bridge across the same [during Rama avathAram];

Before that You reclined on the [milky] ocean as well

as churned during KoormaavathAram! You sent those

strong weapons and killed Maali raakshasan, and Hema

maali (golden deer- maareecha mayaa mrugam) and made

them enter the gates of Yama.

A wonderful PAsuram enlisting all glorious actions of

the Lord establishing his peerless Supremacy. None

else can and has done such grandest deeds and will be

able to do.

Maali maali maan vilangu- Maali means midukku-

majestic; So the Vilangu is a common name; maan- deer

is the specific animal. Thus maareechan is referred

to.

Ravana¡¦s mother- Kaikasi; and her father was Sumaali,

His borther Maaali, elder brother Maalyavaan; they did

penance and obtained powers to occupy the lankA city

(which was built by ViswakarmA) and conquered Devas

and enjoyed the place for ages. When devas prayed to

the Lord, He heeded to their request and promised to

them to fight against these asurAs. This Maalyavaan,

Maali and Sumaali were conquered by Vishnu in the

battle and during the battle Maali's head was cut by

the divine ChakrA while Maalyavaan and Sumaali went

running away and hid themselves in LankA city. Hence

entering the gate of Yama does not apply to Sumaali

and Maalyavaan and hence only Maali can be inferred in

this verse. Maali maali- twice may mean- Maali who

has maalai (garland); Or all are adjectives of

Maareechan as described above. Hence Raaama avathAram

is mentioned, it is more appropriate to refer to

maareechan. Or it may mean that the One who killed

Maali and the Maareechan are one and the same i.e Lord

Vishnu. [This is mentioned in utthara kaandam- 8th

sargam].

Sumaali is mentioned in 107th verse of Thirucchandha

viruttham and AzhwAr may not have brought him here

also. There is no special word as Sumaali.

Maalyavaan- He actually advised Raavanan against the

battle and hence he pleases the Lord. Hence vilangu

kaalan- means: The Kaalan- Yama goes farther as far

as Maalyavaan is concerned (because he advises good

things to RaavaNan). So, Yama goes away from

Maalyavaan.

Maareechan word is swarasm- most appropriate. Once

these Yama and other Devas were conquered by these

Maareechan and now these asurAs are made to enter the

Yama's gate and hence that pleases Yama- can also be

inferred- Sri UttamUr Swamy enjoys.
