Aadhi aadhi aadhi nee Or aNdam aadhi aathalaal sOthiyaatha sOthi nee adhu uNmaiyil viLanginaay vEdhamaagi vELviyaagi viNNinOdu maNNumaay aadhiyaagi aayanaaya maayam eNnna maayamE? (34) You are three causes; Thus You are the upAdhAna kaaraNam and hence You perform the unparralled unimaginable deed of creating, sustaining and protecting the huge vast Universe (prakruthi maNdalam); You are the jYothiswarUpI! The One who is beyond the Space (Prakruthi)- who is beyond comprehension even! When such is the case, You also appeared as a vyUha avathAram as jyOthi (in Dhivya mangaLa vigraham)! That is not a wonder too due to Your great sowlabhya guNA! Such a Lordhsip- You appeared verily as Vedas themselves (which are prmANAs – proof for us- as they are apourushEyam- authorless); You are the ArAdhana (prayers) mentioned in those Vedas elaborately! You are also the fruits obtained by performing those pUja- ArAdhanA; Thus You are moksha sthAna, bhOgasthAnaas; You are thus the cause of everything; And above all these, You appeared as an illiterate, innocent Kutti KaNNan as if You do not know anything! What a maayam! (Ascharyam- wonder!) All deeds actions, beings and non beings have causes and they are three types: upAdhAnam [material cause], nimittha kAraNam (efficient or instrumental cause) and sahakaari kaaraNam (auxiliary cause). For example to make a pot, we need to have materials, i.e clay, the knowledge to make a pot from the clay and the auxiliary materials like the shaft, waters etc.. They are called respectively, upAdhAnam, nimittham and sahakaari. All are the same in our case for the Universe creation and actions as He alone is all three causes. Only from saasthrAs can one learn this- saasthrayOnithvaath. The Brahman with subtle (sUkshma) chit and achit tatvas as his body/mode/attribute (Sareeram/Prakaaram/Viseshanam-Dharmam) gets the expanded (sthUla) chit and achit tatvas as his body/mode/attribute (Sareeram/Prakaaram/Viseshanam-Dharmam). Therefore the Brahman is the upAdAna kAraNam – material cause of the universe. As the Brahman wishes (Sankalpam) and creates the universe as told above, he is the nimiththa kAraNam – efficient cause. As the Brahman is having infinite and divine powers which are extraordinary and beyond the reach of our sense organs, he needs no other accessories (Sahakaari) in this creation. The verses of the Upanishad "Yenaasrutam Srutam Bhavathi..." etc., and the example of clay quoted by the Upanishad beyond doubt establishes that the Brahman is the material cause (upAdAna kAraNam) of the universe. Here an important aspect has to be noted. Just the mere existence of clay (cause) is not enough for imparting the knowledge of things made of clay like pot (effect). Therefore the term "Yena" here has to be understood as "By knowing which". This enlightens us by imparting knowledge about the fact that Brahman is absolutely with infinite auspicious/divine characteristics/attributes that are peerless. "Uthatam Aadesam Apraakshaya:" is summarised as follows: Udaalaka asked his son Swethakethu "Have you known the Brahman who is having absolutely infinite auspicious/divine attributes like omniscience (sarvagnyatvam), omnipotence (sarvasakthitvam) and omnipresence (sarvavyaapakatvam) and is the only material cause of the universe?" [from Sri MS Hari’s wrote up] But Brahman- the Lord is akilahEya prathyaneekan- the One who does not get affected by impurities and imperfections! Thus being the Sarva kaaraNan – none can be except You. None can comprehend You just by logic or anumANam (yukthi); you will have to be understood only with saasthrAs. [naishA tharkkENa mathirApanEyA] Such greatest You- jyOthiswarUpi at Paramapadham also appeared as Vaasudeva, SankarshNa, Pradhyumna, Aniruddhan in vyUha avathArams with same Parathvam; But even in Rama avathAram You showed Your divinity – one can say- in jatAyu mOksham; Sabhari mOksha saakshi bhUthan; ahalyA Saapa vimOchanam incident; and others. However You appeared as infant cowherd child – jArachOra sikhAmaNi- stealing butter, curd and ghee- and caught by the illiterate woman and be tied down by a small rope. You the object and ArAdhyan of Vedas- the fruit of Vedas appeared as Kutti KaNNan. This is athyAscharyam (wonder of all wonders). Your being Sarva kaaraNan and still unaffected by imperfections is nothing compared to this wonder of all wonders.
