Along with those two, he (Rudran) came in support of bANAsura against the battle with KaNNan and they [all of them] were chased away by KaNNan in the said battle and KaNNan cut the thousand shoulders of the asurA with His divine charka due to His great mercy for sparing his life (after Rudran sought forgiveness on behalf of bANAsura). This KaNNan is none other than mahAvishNu- who is the cause of even Rudra and brahmA and he resides in this grandest temple in a place by name Srirangam- where lots of devotees and paramaikAnthis assemble and take sacred bath in the river. Due to Parvathi’s anugraham, Ushai (bANAsura’s daughter) was blessed with a dream that only Aniruddhan [KaNNan’s grandson] will be her husband and her girl friend Chithra lEkhA used to draw well and with her yogic power, she got to know of Aniruddhan’s whareabouts and the friend arranged for having Usha and Aniruddhan be together in her palace (bringing him with Chithra’s yogic powers). The security force came to know of the same and informed the girl’s father bANAsura and he started the battle with Aniruddhan and tied him with NAgAsthram; Having heard this from Sage Narada, KaNNan rushed with his army to bANAsura’s place anf fought with him. Rudran – the one who granted him strength and thousand shoulders- appointed fire god at the entrance of the fort as the rampart and organizes his sons and himself as supporter to bANAsura and entered the battle. KaNNan not surprisingly, effortlessly conquered all of them and in fact chased them - who ran away with fear showing their backs seeing the fiery divine chakradhAri. He cut the 1000 shouldres of bANAsura and tamed the pride of Rudra and his sons. Such Supreme Lordship- KaNNan is mahAvishNu and he resides in this Srirangam. mODi- Durga- She also was able to fight and hence she had also come along- one can say. mOdi also means axe- she came as an axe in Rudran's hand lajjaiyAya- vetkam- shame- shyness is the meaning. Saapam yeydhi- ParamaikAnthins do not pray to her; and that is her curse. OR one can also infer that since he (Rudran) was cursed with the skull stuck to his palm; she is the spouse of his and hence saapam yeydhi. Or saapam- may also mean Bow- on one hand he has Durga and the other hand holding the bow. With all that in both hands, he ran away followed by his children. Saapam yeydhi- Let us look at the commentary of Vishnu purANam- Vishnu chittheeyam- when kaNNan was fighting with Rudran and bANAsura, she (Durga) came as an axe (kOdari- mOdi)… shamelessly . [As also mentioned in Harivamsa sloka- if one performs his prostration to Durga once, his puNya of prostrating and praying to Vishnu for twelve years will be destroyed. And that is the curse on the axe (Durga) after the battle]. This axe is none other than Gowri – says Harivamsam. samsApa ChainAm bhagawaan yasCha mAm bhakthi samyutham | dwAdhaSAbdham namaskuryAth yath phalam mahath || thvannamaskaraNAth thasya thath sarvam namSayarthA sadhA dhigambarA bhUyA: thishta vA gaCCha vA(S)gratha: || mukkaNAn- three eyed- The one who sent the third eye fire- as rampart for bANAsura’s fort. (refer also Thirumaaymozhi 3.6.10) Adhimaal- maal- KaNNan- after cutting the shoulders of bANAsura, mukkaNNan (three eyed One- Rudran) bowed down to KaNNan and sought forgiveness on bANAsura’s behalf and pleaded KaNNan for sparing his (bANAsura’s life) and also prayed to Him for showing the same mercy and dayA on Rudran himself as before and also be merciful on his adiyaan- bANAsura. KaNNan- the most compassionate One- left bANAsura’s four shoulders and left him alive.. bANAsura and Rudra and co. later treated Aniruddhan with great honour and also his relations and friends and arranged for Usha and Aniruddhan’s wedding /life.. Such greatest - victorious Lord- the most merciful and most compassionate One- KaNNan is here at Srirangam easily accessible for all of us. Such is His sowlabhyam....
